A Vow
They do not hear me when I scream,
Nor do they see me when I cry.
They will not speak kind words to me
For they are all mute, deaf, and blind.
They hear a creature scream.
They see it howl in their pain.
They never seemed to notice,
That I was the one beaten lame.
They beat me with fists and clubs
And cut me with knives.
Just to let me feel the pain
That they had in their lives.
I no longer cry when they beat me
Nor do I longer fight back.
I've learned it just made it harder,
When they begin their attack.
After their done beating me,
They leave me there to die.
But my burden starts to heal me
And I always wondered 'Why?'
'What have I done to deserve this life?'
'Had I done something wrong?'
'What could have made these kind people'
'Look at me with hatred so strong?'
But then I would smile sadly
And remember the words an old man said
'To them you are a scapegoat,'
'For their loss and their grief.'
'Indeed they want you dead.'
I hadn't believed my ears
And my eyes burned from inside.
But then he said something else,
'For what you hold within.'
He told me then of my mother.
Of her strength and beauty.
Then he told me of my father.
Of his speed and mercy.
It had not occurred to me
That they had been heroes.
That they were dead.
I only realized that they had loved me
As I sit and think of my parents now
I think I must make them proud.
Make them proud of their home
And proud of myself.
I must live up to their achievements
And take my challenges in stride.

Not because I am the child of heroes
