Flight

James walked onto the Quidditch pitch and smiled at the sight of Alice sitting on a broom. "Do you need a little assistance?"

Alice got off of the broom. "No, I do not."

"It looked like you were trying to fly?"

She glared at him. Her eyes lingered on the parchment and deck of cards he carried. "What are you doing here?"

He grinned. "Meeting the boys for a little game, and we can't keep score without something to write on."

"At a Quidditch pitch?" Alice asked skeptically.

James shrugged. "We all love it here, and it's like a second, or third home, if we count the Gryffindor Common Room, to us. I'm a little early, though. So, are you sure you don't want any help?"

"You'll think I'm a coward."

"You're a Gryffindor, so how can you be a coward?"

Alice bit her bottom lip. "I'm scared of flying, and I was hoping I could get over my fear."

James put the parchment and cards on the ground walked over to her. "Maybe it would help if you had someone fly with you. Straddle it again."

She eyed him.

"I promise I won't let anything happen to you. Just have some faith in me and straddle the broom."

Alice finally did so, and James got on behind her. He kicked up, and Alice screamed fearfully.

James held the brrom tightly and whispered, "It's okay, Alice. I'm not going to let anything happen to you. Just take deep, calming breaths."

Alice did so, but she still couldn't open her eyes.

"If you can't look down, look at me."

Alice turned her head so her eyes met James' hazel gaze. The normally joking look was replaced with a seriousness she very rarely saw on the other Gryffindor's face.

They flew around the pitch, and before she knew it, they were landing.

They got off of the broom, and James grinned when he realized she was blushing . "You're quite cute with red cheeks," he flirted.

"Maybe this is shallow of me, but after that, I think I kind of like you now," she flirted back.

"Kind of like me, huh? I can work with that."
