AN: Inspired by "Just a Kid" by Simple Plan. That is where many of the things Severus says come from.
I don't own the characters or the song, I'm just using them for this story.
Just a Kid
Severus Snape was a particularly lonely child who spent a lot of his time alone. He would often look around at all the students having fun and wondered why he never got to join in.
He looked at Lily and noticed that she was sitting by herself so he went over to her.
"Hello Lily," he said, smiling at her.
"Oh, Severus… I was just going to see James…" Lily replied, looking away from him and standing up.
"Oh… Ok… Another time then?" he asked hopefully.
"Yeah maybe another time…" she replied before disappearing to go and find James.
He sighed, "Everyone's got someone to go except me." He sat down where Lily had been sitting and put his head in his hands. "What's another night on your own when you're spending every day on your own anyway?" he asked himself, sighing again.
He heard James and Lily laughing and wished he could be part of their fun. He got up and wandered back into the castle and down the stairs into the dungeon. "What the fuck is wrong with me?" he asked himself as he headed towards the common room, "I don't fit in with anybody. Even Lily doesn't like me any more. How did this happen to me?"
He reached the portrait and muttered "Gillyweed," and the portrait opened in front of him and let him through into the common room. He headed up to the empty dormitory and said "And when the night is dead I'll crawl into my bed and stare at these four walls again," he sighed and got into bed, closing the curtains around it.
He lay down in his bed and stared into space. "And I'm wide awake, I'm bored and I can't fall asleep. Every night is the worst night ever," he said to himself, wondering what Lily was doing.
After thinking about her for some time he fell into a deep sleep and awoke early that morning. He went down to the great hall and forced himself to eat a few mouthfuls of food before going outside and looking around for Lily. After several hours he was bored of waiting and said to himself "I woke up at 7am and waited until 11am and still she didn't bother to call…" he sighed, wondering whether it was even worth trying to be friends with her any more. "I have one good friend and I don't even hear from them…" He stood up and wandered to the lake and sat down beside it, watching all the insects.
"I'll try to think about the last time I had a good time… Yeah that might cheer me up," he said, thinking as hard as he could but no good thoughts came to him. "Tonight they'll all go to Hogsmeade and the world will be having more fun than me tonight. Why couldn't my dad just sign the paper for once?" he asked, himself sighing again and picking himself up once more. "I'm just a kid and life is a nightmare," he said, again to himself, as he walked round the edge of the lake, "I'm just a kid and I know that is not fair," he said, wondering what life would be like as an adult if it was this bad as a child.
"Nobody cares and they're going to leave me here on my own again. Tonight nobody cares and tonight I'm all alone again," he said as he looked back up at the castle and saw Lily and James kissing and Remus, Sirius and Peter laughing at some joke one of them had just told.
"I'm just a kid tonight but one day when I'm older it'll be them that will be alone," he said, vowing that some how he would get revenge. Maybe not today, but one day.
