She stared down at the water, a look of hope in her eyes. The light breeze made her skirt dance in the night.

She stepped forward quietly, afraid someone would here her feet on the ground beneath her. This might as well be my only chance to be with Eichi, she thought.

The river looked so deep. It was almost as if it was a bottomless pit, just waiting for her to come in so it could take her.

She clutched her pendant and put one foot in, taking one last look at the moon behind her.

"I'm sorry, Takuto," she whispered before jumping into the river.

She ducked her head under and held her breath. Feeling calm, she let go of the necklace and hugged herself. She smiled, knowing she would be with Eichi soon.

Before she knew it, her old world went blank.

--

She opened her eyes, expecting to see the world differently than she had when she was alive. She expected to see Eichi, smiling and waving at her within a sea of clouds.

What she did see was the dark night sky, and Takuto's face looming above her's.

"Your awake," he whispered, his hand on his chest. She sat up and looked around.

"How are you here, Takuto?" He gave her a confused look.

"What do you mean?"

"How are you in heaven with me?" His eyes went wide.

"Why would you be in heaven, Mirsuki?" he asked. He took her hand and gave it a light squeeze.

"Because I jumped in the river. I remember everything going black. I felt calm and peaceful." He wrapped his arms around her waist and pulled her into his chest, mumbling incoherent words into her hair.

"Why would you do that?" he whispered, already knowing the answer.

"I wanted to be with Eicih!" she screamed, tears starting to form in her eyes.

"Mitsuki, did I ever tell you how I became a shinigami?" She shook her head no. "Well, to make things simple, I commited suicide, which is what you were about to do before I saved you."

"So I wouldn't have been able to see Eichi?"

"I'm sorry, but no." he answered sadly. "You would have become a shinigami, just like me."

"That would have been better than staying here," she said, her voice bitter. She was staring at the sky.

"Why?" he asked, worried that she would want to kill herself. Why would she want to be punished forever instead of living?

"At least I would have been with one of the people I love." She covered her mouth in surprise at what she had just said.

"Mitsuki, I don't think you feel well. Why don't we go inside?" Any excuse for what she just said would do. He picked her up bridal style and carried her into her room.

"I miss Eichi," she whispered as he placed her onto her bed.

"I know," he answered. He was about to walk out of the room when she grabbed his wrist.

"Takuto, stay here. You're the only one who can keep me alive. For now, I suppose." Her eyes looked sad.

"I'll stay." He laid down next to her.

"Save me," she whispered crying into his chest.

"I will," he whispered. She leaned up and kissed him on the lips.

"Thank you," she said, "for loving me."

"No problem," he said. "It's my pleasure."
