Angel of Shadow
Do you see, my friend,
the dark cavern within which
you so subside…?
Do you hear, brother,
church bells ringing solemnly
for the perishing…?
Do you feel, dearest,
those many human souls that
glow all about you…?
What terrors have those
wide and frightened eyes witnessed,
so much like a child's?
For pain is written
within the clear depths of those
shadowed irises;
your heart is a child
indeed, lost beneath itself
in your sorrowed tears,
in eternal rings,
the circles under your lids,
in that meek, ill frame.
For though you were born
cast in the witch's shadow
that tortured your so;
for though you endured
the extremities of great
fear and horrid shame;
for though you possess
the blood of night and darkness
with thin, tattered wings;
there lies gorgeous light
beyond this course, crimson cage
that envelopes you…
in those shaded pupils,
beneath veins which carry black
blood… lies a white soul.
