Prompt: heart
It was pathetic looking, really, really pathetic looking. The construction paper was old, so old that it was no longer blood red, but rather a maroon like color. The lace around the edges was almost brown. The paper had been folded for so long that she feared opening it and ripping it in half.
Although a ripped paper, heart would be a good symbol of her on this particular Valentine's Day.
Still, she wasn't sure whose it was or how it got on her desk, so she had to be careful. She opened it slowly and read the words written in blue crayon.
iMom,
Happy Valentine's Day.
Love you,
Danny/i
Lindsay blinked and read it again to make sure it actually said what she thought it said. She looked up, saw no one there, and looked at the car again.
Why was this here? Had Danny left it for her or….was it just an accident?
She looked down at her desk again and this time she saw something she had missed before. There was an envelope with her name on it. She opened it and pulled out another red construction paper heart, this one brand new. It was folded in half and she opened it to read.
iLindsay,
I wrote that card to my mother when I was five years old to tell her I loved her. It's taken 28 years for me to be ready to say it again and so now I give you both these hearts—one I made as a child, one as an adult whose life has changed because of you.
And I hope, with both my hearts that you'll find it in yours to love me back and forgive me.
Yours always,
Danny/i
Lindsay closed her eyes, tears spilling down her face. She looked up and saw Danny at the door.
And she smiled.
