He knew it from the moment her saw her. He knew something was wrong. He could see it in the way she stared off, her eyes longing for something. He didn't know what, but it was something big. He longed to find out what it was. He felt some inexplicable drawing to her, and he felt the need to protect her from the world. To protect her from whatever this pain was.
Then, he discovered what it was. Now, he was angry. He had to save her. He had to save this angel from the demon that plagued her. He wanted to fill the emptiness in her eyes. He wanted to brush away every tear, chase away all the pain. Of course, he could never show this on the outside. They were co-workers, nothing more. He acted distant, never engaging in any of their fun. He was the outsider, already a veteran at this job. He never was one for being affectionate. His sensitive side, and even his kind side, was only shown to a select few.
But she was different. He knew it was cliché, but he also knew it was true. He could be himself with her. He could let down the guarded wall, if only for a moment. He knew she would accept him. He knew she would understand him. She would be the One for him. For she understood what pain and fear felt like. He could see it in every line in her face.
And when they kissed, it was like magic. She wasn't used to kisses like this. Neither was he. That's when they both knew. That's when they realized that they needed each other. But she couldn't. Not when she was suffering. She couldn't let anything happen to this man. She couldn't show him herself, for then he may have to feel this hurt too, and she could never do it to him. She just couldn't
But, she fell for him anyway. And she knew he was falling for her. She lived for his kisses, his tender touch, and the way it felt to be held by him. She forgot everything while he held her, wishing away all the fear. If only for a moment.
They both knew it couldn't last long. They both knew what was inevitable. But, for now, they are just happy to be with each other. They are happy to feel something besides pain and despair. They are happy to feel love. She is content to just stay here, lying in pure bliss. Feeling his arms around her, and nothing else. They have that inexplicable feeling, they have each other, and they don't need anything else.
