Disclaimer: I don't own Harry Potter

All he had left?

"Vernon, dear, can you please get Dudders in his high chair?" Petunia called as she went to put the milk bottles out.

"Yes, dear." He replied, carrying a squirming Dudley. As he was putting Dudley into his high chair he heard a blood curdling scream, he yanked Dudley out of his chair, which was difficult as he was already too big for it, and rushed to the front door where Petunia was.

The milk bottles slipped from her hands and shattered at her feet, shards of glass flying all over and grazing the infant that was sleeping on the top step. After a moment's hesitation she bent down and picked up the baby. Its eyes were open and she was pretty sure that after the shock of being woken up from her scream had worn off he was going to start wailing. Her eyes moved to his forehead where there was a lightning bolt shaped scar, visible under his jet black hair. Petunia looked back at the baby's eyes, she knew those eyes, there was no mistaking them, but why, why would Lily leave Harry on her doorstep? It was then that she noticed the envelope Harry still had tucked in his blankets.

"Petunia!" puffed Vernon as he came to a halt behind her, Dudley screaming in his arms. At the sound of Dudley's screaming Harry was broken out of his shock and true to Petunia's thoughts he started wailing.

"Let's just get back inside before the neighbours start staring." Petunia said as she pushed past Vernon and walked into the sitting room. She dumped the crying baby on the couch and ripped open the letter. Lily had no business leaving her freak child here.

"What is this? Whose kid is this? What are you reading?" demanded Vernon without taking a breath; he had given Dudley a bottle to keep him quiet as he spoke to Petunia.

"Lily." Was all she said before going quiet as she read the letter.

Dear Petunia and Vernon,

I am so sorry to tell you that James and Lily Potter have died...

And so the letter went on, Petunia's hands started to shake as she read further. Lily was dead. Lord Voldemort had killed her baby sister. How could this be happening?

Only when Vernon put his arm around her did Petunia realise she was shaking and sobbing. No matter what had happened between the two sisters Petunia would always love Lily.

"What happened?" Vernon asked softly

"Umm, she's dead. Lily and James were murdered last night."

Vernon stayed silent, served them right, getting mixed up in all the magic stuff, he thought.

"And the baby?"

"Harry." She answered as she picked the little green eyed boy up and started swaying him in an attempt to stop him crying, "He's staying with us now."

"No." Vernon said sharply

"What?" asked Petunia in shock

"No. I don't want some freak child being around Dudley. No, we're putting him in an orphanage."

"No we aren't! He's my sisters' son. He's staying with us!"

"Petunia!" Vernon yelled

"End of discussion!" she yelled back, anger all over her face

He relented, "Fine, then we'll stamp the abnormality and freak out of him. He'll be one, won't he?"

"Yes, he will." Petunia whispered

"Disgusting!" Vernon spat as he stormed back into the kitchen to get another bottle for Dudley.

As he went Petunia looked down into the green eyes Harry had inherited from Lily. How she would have hated for Harry to be left in her care, but what choice did she have now? They were all he had left.

"He's staying in the cupboard under the stairs!" Petunia heard Vernon yell as she picked up the letter left by Albus Dumbledore and read it again.
