A cool breeze wafted through the summer air, making Mahiro shiver. Her brother and Tokiko were walking ahead of her. The young girl was counting the clouds in the sky as she walked, a laugh spilling from her open mouth. The car hit her in an instant. Kazuki felt the passage of the vehicle from his place on the sidewalk and turned around. His little sister was lying on the asphalt, her body twisted and broken. The driver had stopped and stumbled towards the body he had hit. Alcohol was on the man's breath but Kazuki was dead to anything else, his eyes locking onto Mahiro's body. He had reached her now and reached out a trembling hand as if to banish this sight from his eyes. When his hand met her rapidly cooling flesh he broke down. The paramedics had arrived and had quickly seen that nothing they could do would bring the girl back. Tokiko approached Kazuki and had wrapped her arms around him, bringing him close to her. Tears fell from his eyes and he didn't try and stop them. Reaching out a hand Tokiko stroked his hair, tears cascading down her face as well.
After the paramedics had arrived they took the corpse to the morgue, Kazuki and Tokiko following. What followed was paperwork and questioning that passed by in a blur. Soon enough Kazuki and Tokiko were left alone with Mahiro's corpse. Kazuki approached the body and reached a hand towards his heart. He was stopped by Tokiko's hand on his shoulder.
"It's too late. A Kakagune can only be used to bring someone back to life an hour after they die." Kazuki ignored her and drew out his Kakugane. "Kazuki, I know how you feel but think about Mahiro. She would wake up and find her brother dead. Would you want to bring her back just to cause her more pain?" Kazuki moved his Kakugane back into his chest. "Let's go. There's nothing more we can do."
"Hai." Kazuki said, glancing back at the room one more time before he left.
