The Devil and The Angel
"You will be able to choose what you want in return," He had said, a cruel smirk tilting his lips upward. "I assume you'll take the girl?"
Draco's head dipped slightly and the Dark Lord's lips twitched again.
"Very well."
"Here Malfoy," a masked figure - one of his own men - said, shoving a sobbing figure towards him. "All dead besides her. And she's a nice find."
"Don't bloody look at her," Draco snapped, pulling the small redheaded girl from his arms and turning her to face him. "If I hear you've done anything to her, I'll kill you myself."
Draco couldn't see the other man's face, but he could feel the hatred coming from him as he mumbled an apology and left in a flurry of black robes. Once he was gone Draco looked to his prize.
The girl sobbed harder as he took her into his arms; gently kissing her hair.
"Gin?" he asked carefully.
"You said you'd try!" she accused, looking up at him with bloodshot eyes, "You said you'd try to save them!" Tears fell down her face and she glared at him as she pushed against his chest with a small fist.
Draco's cool façade faltered briefly as he watched her face, but it instantly came back up when he remembered where he was, and what floated above him in the sky. The Dark Mark taunted him, both the one that marred his forearm, and the one that tainted the night sky.
"I tried."
"You failed," she spat, her red hair falling to cover her face.
"Why?" she asked quietly, tears pouring down her face.
"I... you're alive. Isn't that enough?"
He pulled her warm body closer into his. She didn't grant him a response, only pushing her face further into his expensive robes.
"I'm sorry. I don't deserve you, you know," he whispered softly, pushing back her hair to gaze sadly into her eyes. Draco gently pulled her back and looked at her from an arms length before pressing his lips to hers. He held her to his chest and she let out a small whimper. When he pulled back the tears were falling down her face again.
"Did you honestly try?" she asked softly, ignoring the chaos going on around them.
"I tried."
"Then... then why?" she asked, her voice breaking before she could ask a full question.
"He wanted all of you dead, Love. The fact that you're alive is a huge feat in itself. But I couldn't let him do anything to my angel."
She let out a small sob, "Your angel?"
Draco kissed her once more before gently studying her. She was so small and naïve. She didn't belong in his world. She didn't deserve to be anywhere near him, not with the torture and death that he saw daily. She deserved happiness, which was something he could only attempt to provide a semblance of.
"You're an angel, you know Gin. And I... all I am is the devil who's fallen for you."
