The Witch and Her Grimm

Hilda Evans-Black, formerly Potter, knew her regular customers well. Some of her customers she knew better than others. When it came to her regulars, she knew what time of the day they came in in addition to their regular orders and their names. That was how she knew something was going with one of her favorite customers, Detective Nick Burkhardt of the Third Precinct of the Portland Police Department. He didn't come in for several days, and his partner, Hank Griffin, picked up Nick's usual breakfast order for a week.

...

"Where's Nick?" she asked after a week. Hilda was concerned about him.

Nick was something else. They had met when someone broke into her cafe. It was one of Nick's final cases as a regular detective before becoming a homicide detective with the Third Precinct. When they met, Hilda fell hard and fast. After the case was wrapped, she delivered a "thank you" basket of muffins to the Third Precinct. That was when she learned Nick had a girlfriend, Juliette Silverton, and they were moving in together. Hilda was devastated to learn that, but she found joy in Nick returning to her cafe. Apparently she had some of the best muffins in the city. It was the recipe she got from Molly Weasley, which was a Prewett recipe.

"He's at the hospital with Juliette," Hank answered, concern in his tone, as he handed Hilda a twenty.

Something bitter twisted in her stomach at the mention of Nick and his girlfriend. Taking a deep breath, she forced herself to ignore it. "Is everything alright with her?" Hilda asked as she took the money before handing Hank's his change.

Hank shrugged. "She got some kind of cat scratch," he explained, "that landed her in a coma for a few days. She woke up, but she doesn't remember Nick – like all of her memories about Nick are gone."

Hilda's heart went out to Nick. That was beyond horrible, and it sounded like magic. "I hope she remembers soon," she said, handing Hank his order. While she liked Nick, she wanted him to happy. He deserved as much.

"Are you alright?" asked Hilda, taking a moment to Hank over. She could tell something was wrong. He kept looking over his shoulder and he would jump if someone moved too closely to him.

"I'm fine," Hank replied with a lie.

Her green eyes narrowed. "If you ever find yourself in need," she said, "I have an herbal tea blend that's good for relaxing and sleeping."

Hank nodded, his eyes darting up to the menu.

Smiling to herself, Hilda moved onto the next customer. He seemed interested. If Hank needed it, he would be back.

...

Nick returned to the cafe two week later in the mid-morning. He didn't look like himself with dark circles around his eyes. "Black coffee and a plain bagel," he ordered with greeting her.

Hilda frowned, ringing up his order. That wasn't his usual order. Something was wrong with Nick, and she would guess it was something big. Behind her, Tony got filling the order.

"How are you doing?" she asked.

Nick shrugged, handing her some money.

"How's Juliette?" she questioned, counting the money. "I heard she was in the hospital."

"She's being released soon," Nick said with a shrug.

Hilda chose not to say anything. She handed Nick his bagel and his coffee.

Nick took his order and he quickly left the cafe, offering a small wave before he disappeared onto the street.

Hilda sighed as she watched him leave. Something more was going on with him. She had noticed a change in him back in October, around the time his Aunt Marie died. It looked like Nick was carrying the weight of world on his shoulders. That weight looked like it was getting heavier by the day.

...

A week later, Hank visited her cafe late one evening. He was looking better, like he was sleeping and he wasn't jumping as much. That night he came in with two other people – a father and a daughter, based off of the appearances and their shared physical traits.

"Can I get that tea you mentioned?" Hank ordered. "The one for relaxing and sleeping."

"Of course," Hilda answered, stepping back from the register. It was a special herbal blend that she mixed upon request.

"Make it two?" the girl asked, glancing between Hank and her father.

"Anything you want, Carly," her father said, placing a hand on her shoulder.

"Coming right up," Hilda promised, glancing between the group.

As she was steeping the tea, she glanced over. She found the father and Carly had woge into Coyotl. Carly glanced over, locking eyes with her.

Against her better judgement, Hilda dove into the young woman's mind. She pulled out a moment later, turning back to look at the tea. Carly was having trouble sleeping. She was plagued by nightmares of her uncle raping her in Aseveracion.

Hilda quickly finished making the teas, bringing them over to Hank and Carly. She watched with a smile as they each took a sip, humming in approval of the taste.

The group took their drinks to a small table in the corner. Hilda kept an eye on them during their visit while she dug around in her cell phone. She was an active member of the wesen community and she knew a lot of people. She knew a few therapists and she wanted to pass the names onto Carly's father, Jarold, in event he needed them.

She found a chance to approach him when Hank left and Carly got up from the table. Walking over, Hilda placed a piece of paper in front of Jarold.

"Here," she said. "These are some of the best therapists in the area that have experience with our kind."

Jarold looked up at her with wide eyes as he woge.

"I'm a zauberhaft-hexenbiest," she said, answering his unasked question. "I tend to startle people when I woge."

Picking up the piece of paper, Jarold nodded as he looked over the list. "How did you–?" he asked.

"Just a feeling," Hilda lied. She won't tell the man that she peaked into his daughter's mind. No one needed to know she used Legilimency – though most wesen considered it telepathy.

...

After that first visit, Carly and Jarold became regulars at the cafe. Carly would show up on weekdays with a stack of textbooks and a laptop, making herself comfortable in a small table. Jarold would come by in the morning or around lunch to order coffee.

During their regular visits, Hilda was pleased to see a change in Carly. She remained hyperaware of her surroundings and she jumped at sudden movements, but there moments when she would relax and smile, looking like a carefree teenager.

"Thank you," Jarold said one morning as he picked up his coffee. There was relief in his tone and in his eyes. "Dr. Hanson is really helping Carly."

"It was no problem," Hilda sincerely told him. After looking in his daughter's mind, it was the least she could do. "I'm happy to help."

Jarold smiled before leaving.

...

Over the next few months, Nick returned to the cafe and returned to his usual order – a vanilla latte and a blueberry muffin. Hilda continued to observe him. After a few weeks and a few free muffins, Nick confided in her that Juliette had forgotten everything connected to him. Somehow, she remembered everyone and everything else but Nick. Hilda's heart ached for Nick. He sounded heartbroken when he talked about it, but he was determined to make it work with Juliette and be there for her. He was hopeful that everything would turn out.

...

It happened one night in early December. Hilda was out drinking with two of her friends at some trendy bar in the downtown area. She had had a few drinks by the time Nick arrived. He looked tense and heartbroken. She spent a little time with her friends, watching as Nick slowly and sadly nursed a beer.

"I'll see you guys later," Hilda said, waving off her friends as they turned to leave. She watched him leave before turning to approach Nick.

"How are you feeling?" she asked, taking a seat next to Nick at the bar.

He glanced over at her. "I've been better," he muttered, taking a long drink from his beer.

Hilda and Nick sat at the bar for a little, talking and drinking. Hilda spoke a little, mostly small talk related to the upcoming holiday season. Nick nodded and he said a few things, but he largely remained quiet.

"How are things between you and Juliette?" Hilda asked. That was a question she had been dying to ask for weeks. Every time the urge struck, she did her best to ignore it.

"We're done," Nick answered, his voice sounded emotionless. "She doesn't want anything to do with me, anymore."

Hilda straightened up. She forced herself to remain neutral. "I'm sorry to hear that," she muttered. It was a half-truth. She wanted a chance to be with Nick herself, but she wanted him to be happy, even if it was with someone else instead of her.

The pair drank some more. At some point, they started flirting. One thing led to another, and things quickly heated up.

They took a taxi back to Hilda's residence in the Tabor neighborhood. Along the way from the front door to her bedroom, clothes were shed between heated kisses. By the time they fell onto Hilda's king sized bed, Nick was pulling her lacy panties off while Hilda was trying to reach for the lubes and condoms she kept in her bed-sided table.

She had wrapped her fingers around the bottle of lube when Nick pulled her into a long kiss. He pushed her down against the pillows as he took the bottle from her. With a heated look, Nick opened the bottle. That look sent a wave of desire through Hilda. She quickly parted her legs as she eagerly watched Nick.

In the rush and heat of the moment, Hilda forgot about the condoms.

Nick pulled Hilda into a long kiss filled with tongues and teeth as he pushed his fingers into her pussy.

...

The morning after was a little awkward. Nick was polite, but he left rather quickly on a work call, saying something about a crime scene. There was another murder to solve.

As Nick ran out the door, he left Hilda with more than an aching heart. She knew it was rebound sex for Nick. That thought hurt, but it was amazing sex. Hilda had the beard buns on her thighs to prove it.

...

After the first time they had sex, it became a regular occurrence for a few weeks. Sex with Nick was amazing. He really knew how to use his tongue and his fingers to make her orgasm. It would seem that Nick wasn't satisfied until Hilda climaxed three times before he would fuck her, often through a fourth or fifth orgasm. The fifth usually led Hilda to a blackout. When she came to, she often found Nick smirking down at while he worked his fingers in and out of her.

As quickly as they started having sex, they stopped – well Nick, specifically. Nick stopped coming by her house at night, and he stopped visiting the cafe during the day.

It broke Hilda's heart, but she was quickly distracted by the holiday season. A lot of her employees wanted time off or they were interested in extra hours. A few days before Christmas found Hilda throwing up. At first, she dind't think anything of it. It was flu season. But she was puking without a fever or other typical symptoms.

Then as Christmas turned into New Years, Hilda realized she was late. A trip to her healer confirmed she was pregnant.

With that news, Hilda decided it was time to move on from Nick Burkhardt. She started spending more time with members of the wesen community, trying to make new connections and form stronger ties. Hilda decided to try dating within the wesen community. She went a few blind dates sat up by friends, and she went out with the guy from the bank.

The time away from Nick allowed Hilda the chance to think. He deserved to know about her pregnancy. She needed to tell him. Above all, Hilda wanted a family for her unborn child.

...

The next time Hilda ran into Nick, she was on a date with Franklin at Hopworks in North Portland. The date hadn't gone well, and she was leaving when she saw Nick arrive with Hank. She stopped, lingering as she internally debated about whether or not to tell Nick about her pregnancy at the moment. Before she could reach a decision, Hank spotted her.

"Hilda!" Hank greeted, waving her over.

Hilda forced a smile onto her lips as she walked over to him. It would be hard to ignore him.

Hank pulled her into a quick hug and he motioned for her to take a seat between him and his partner.

"How are you?" Hilda asked, glancing between Hank and Nick as she took a seat.

"Busy," Hank answered. "You know how Portland is. What about you?"

Hilda shrugged. "Keeping busy," she replied.

Small talk fell between them easily. It was mostly Hank and Hilda talking with Nick adding a little every so often. After several minutes, Hilda's date walked by. His face lit up when he noticed Hilda and he walked over. Hilda sighed, offering Franklin a forced smile. She didn't want to deal with him.

"I thought you were taking off," he commented, stopping in front of their table.

"I stopped to see my friends," she said.

"Since you're still here, why don't we get dessert or something?" Franklin suggested.

Hilda took a deep breath. Before she could say anything, Nick was.

"She's not interested," he snapped, glaring at Franklin. There was something possessive in his tone. "She's with me now." He wrapped his arm around Hilda's waist, glaring at the other man.

Franklin left a few minutes later, after Hank flashed his badge.

"Thanks," Hilda said, resting her head in his hand. "We were here on a date. It didn't go well."

Nick growled, repositioning his arm. His fingers moving towards her butt.

A bartender stopped by their table. "What are you drinking tonight?" he asked.

"Velvet ESB," Hank answered.

"Seven-Grain," Nick ordered.

"Just water for me," Hilda said with a small smile. She did miss drinking.

The bartender left without another word.

"I thought your usual was a rum and coke," Nick commented, glancing at Hilda.

On the other side of Hilda, Hank raised an eyebrow, glancing between the pair. It wasn't hard to figure out that Hilda was crazy about Nick. He had missed Nick feeling anything for Hilda. Staring his partner, Hank knew that Nick felt something for her, and he hoped it was more than lust. Hilda deserved a great guy. She didn't deserve to be in the middle of the Nick and Juliette love affair.

"It is – it was," she corrected herself. She sighed, muttering, "I'm not drinking these days."

The bartender returned with their drinks. "That lady," the bartender said, pointing out an attractive redhead at the bar, "paid for yours."

Hank took a hold of his drink, offering Nick and Hilda a smile before standing up. "I'm gonna go talk to her," he said, wondering off to the attractive redhead.

Hilda found herself left alone with Nick.

The atmosphere around the two turned awkward and tense.

"What aren't you telling me?" Nick demanded, staring to Hilda's green eyes. His arm remained wrapped around her hips. He knew her well, and he could tell there was something going on with her. It didn't take a genius to figure out it was related to him.

She sighed, wishing she could drink. Alcohol was liquid courage – only because it dulled the senses and logic flew out the window. Taking a deep breath, Hilda forced herself to whisper, "I'm pregnant."

Nick's mouth fell open and his arm slipped from around her hips.

Hilda waited a few seconds for Nick's response. She stood up and muttered something to Nick before running out of the restaurant. Tears burned in her eyes. She arrived to her Mercedes-Benz, quickly climbing in. Forcing herself to calm down, Hilda quickly threw her park into reverse before she backed out of her parking spot.

Once she arrived home, Hilda changed out of her dress and into a pair of sweatpants and cami. She settled onto the couch with a large bowl of chocolate ice cream and turned on a random television channel.

An hour after she got home, the doorbell rang. hilda ignored it at first, but it kept ringing. She got up, storming over to the door. Throwing it open, she was ready to give the person a piece of her mind, but the words died on her tongue when she found Nick Burkhardt standing on her porch.

His eyes lit up at the sight of her, sending butterflies through her stomach. There was a smile on his lips before he pulled her into a kiss, his tongue quickly diving into her mouth. Hilda found herself weak to resist him. There was nothing more she wanted than Nick at the moment. Wrapping her arms around his neck, she led him into her house. Nick pulled back long enough to close the door before pressing her against it. His hands moved to her waist, picking her up. In response, Hilda let Nick push her sweatpants down before wrapping her legs around his hips.

...

Waking up the next morning, Hilda was surprised to find Nick had stayed the night. He hadn't stayed since that first night back in early December – almost a month ago. She got up, showering and pulling on a change of clothes before she headed downstairs. Around the time she was making herself a cup of decaf coffee, Nick entered the kitchen. He poured himself a cup as he pulled Hilda into a kiss.

The kiss quickly ended. Nick took a sip of his coffee, making a face at the taste.

Hilda smiled at his reaction. "It's decaf," she told him. "I can't have caffeine, and I refuse to give up coffee. I don't want to live without it."

A look of disgust crossed Nick's face at the mention of decaf, but it was quickly replaced by a look of understanding and pity. Without a word, he took another long drink. "I'll get use to it," he promised.

With a laugh, Hilda turned her attention to her fridge, pulling out eggs, bacon, and some vegetables. She got to work on making omelets for breakfast. A little later found Nick and Hilda seated at the island as they started eating.

After breakfast, Hilda carried the dishes over to the counter and loaded the dishwasher. The surprises continued to come when she found Nick was still around. He was seated on her couch with reading that day's issue of The Oregonian.

Joining him on the couch, Hilda pulled out her laptop. They sat in silence for an hour. The time passed with Hilda working on payroll and placing a few orders for the cafe. Nick was seated next to her, reading the newspaper. This was the kind of domestic scene that Hilda had dreamed about.

"What are you doing?" Hilda demanded, slamming her laptop shut. She placed it on the coffee table before turning her body to face Nick.

Nick looked up from the newspapers. His eyes fell on her stomach.

Hilda sighed, closing her eyes. This was all about the baby. "I'm keeping it," she told him, standing up. Hilda walked around to the other side of the coffee table, crossing her arms over her stomach. "It's your decision how active you want to be."

"You won't keep me away?" Nick asked, his eyes pleading and hopeful.

Shaking her head, Hilda explained, "I could never imagine doing that. Our kid deserves both of us."

She took a deep breath before continuing, "I'm an orphan, and I always wanted my parents around. I know what it's like not to have either, and I couldn't imagine keeping you away." Tears entered her eyes, and she closed them.

Arms wrapped around her waist, pulling her against Nick's chest. Leaning down, Nick placed a gentle kiss on her forehead.

...

Over the next few weeks, Nick and Hilda fell into a routine. Whatever it was, it was nice. Nick answered his phone at three in the morning before showing up at Hilda's house with whatever she was craving or for a midnight booty-call. He attended the doctor's appointments with her, staring at the ultrasound pictures with wide eyes. He took care of her in the morning – or whatever time of day – when the morning sickness was too horrible. He dealt with her hormones, holding her through the end of Titanic or going down on her in the middle of her kitchen.

In fact, Nick started staying over at her house a few nights a week. He had a drawer in her dresser and a load of laundry in her washing machine.

Even though Hilda and Nick were spending more time together, they weren't getting to know one another better. They had learned a few things about each other, but not a lot. Nick learned that Hilda was allergic to nuts and strawberries, she hated cooked tomatoes and spicy food, and she loved coffee. Meanwhile Hilda learned that Nick's comfort food was anything crunchy, he ate fast food when he was stressed, and he worked odd hours, even as a homicide detective.

...

It was the beginning of February when Hilda learned Nick's secret. He brought an old book over to her house. She piked over his shoulder while he flipped through it.

"Your information on mondwölfe is outdated," she said, placing a beer next to him.

Nick tensed and froze for a few seconds before he turned to look at her with something unreadable in his eyes. He struggled for a moment before asking, "You know what a mondwölfe is?"

Hilda's green eyes widened. She hadn't even thought about what she was saying until she said it. Her fingers twitched with the urge to grab the Elder Wand and cast a Memory Charm. "I learned about them in school," she answered cautiously. If this conversaion didn't go well then she would cast her charm. "What about you?"

He didn't say anything. Instead he grabbed the beer and took a long drink. After a moment, he answered, "My family's been researching them for generation."

Green eyes narrowed in thought, Hilda tried to recall what some of her customers had been talking about – including Carly and Jarold. "You're the Grimm, aren't you?" she asked.

He froze for a second before turning to look at Hilda.

"I think your book would have me listened as both a zauberhaft and a hexenbiest," she offered in explanation.

Eyes wide, Nick stood up. "Y-you're a wesen?" he asked. His face hardened.

Nodding, Hilda tensed. Her right hand flew to her wand, fingers curling around the handle. She didn't pull it out. "Is that a problem?" she asked, her voice icy. "I heard you aren't like your ancestors."

Nick stood up and he walked over to Hilda. He wrapped his arms around her. "I'm not," he whispered. "I'm surprised. I've never seen you woge." He paused for a moment before adding, "I haven't had good experiences with hexenbiest."

"Most people don't," she admitted with a sigh, shaking her head. "My hexenbiest lineage comes from my dad's side through the British Isles by way of the Roman Empire through Germany."

"What about your zauberhaft?" Nick asked, making a mental note to research it later.

"Both my parents," answered Hilda. "My mom was zauberhaft and my dad was half."

Nick nodded, his hands working on unbuttoning her blouse before he pulled her into a kiss.

...

Nick had his arms wrapped around Hilda's waist, and he was kissing the side of her neck. She would giggle a little before moving her head, blocking his access. In response, he would simply move to the other side of her neck.

"Nick, you need to go," Hilda said between giggles. Hank was expecting him at the cafe in a few minutes.

He smiled into her neck. "Hank can wait," he whispered before pressing an open-mouth kiss to her neck. "I need to run by Monroe's to grab something."

Nick loosened his arms, spinning her around. With ease, he picked her up, placing her the island before pulling her into a deep kiss. Hilda smiled into the kiss as she wrapped her arms around his, allowing Nick to deepen the kiss by opening her mouth to his prodding tongue.

A moment later, Nick broke the kiss and started kissing down Hilda's neck.

"Why don't you just move in?" she asked, moaning as he bit down.

Nick froze before pulling his mouth off of her neck. He started into her green eyes. Slowly, he dropped his grip on her and he took a few steps back.

When Nick let go off and failed to respond with words, Hilda leaned back, placing her hands down on the island's surface. She watched as Nick grabbed his things and promised to be back later before running out the door.

She sighed, sliding down off of the island.

Her day passed normally. At noon, she headed into the cafe and worked until closing at nine before returning home. Nick wasn't there waiting for, and he didn't come by that night. In fact, he didn't come by for awhile. She knew Nick and Hank continued to come by the cafe, but they avoided her usual hours.

Though it was difficult, Hilda let Nick have the time and space he needed. He was probably still in love with Juliette, and he was waiting for her to remember him. It would always be Juliette. Hilda was come in second to her.

Soon days turned into weeks.

...

Before Hilda knew it, it was April. April met one thing: her godson would be visiting her soon. Teddy was due to be on spring break in a few days. Originally, she planned to introduce Teddy to Nick. But they weren't playing "house" – whatever they were doing weeks ago – anymore. Hilda was her own, she realized, placing a hand on her bump.

Teddy would be staying with her for a week.

On the second of April, Hilda woke up early and she dropped in something warm before apparating to New York City. Long-distance apparation was tiring, and it wasn't advised to do while pregnant. An hour later, Hilda took a Pepper Up Potion before apparating herself to Platform Nine and Three-Quarters in London to wait for the arrival of the Hogwarts Express. She was joined by Andromeda Tonks. The woman raised an eyebrow at Hilda's pregnant form, but she didn't say anything, which Hilda was grateful for.

She really didn't want to explain what was going on. When Hilda was younger, she had planned on all of her biological children sharing the same father, and that man being her husband. But that wouldn't be happening.

Twenty minutes later, the scarlet Hogwarts Express was pulling onto the platform. The second it stopped, Hogwarts students rushed off of the train and crowded onto the platform. Hilda smiled when she caught sight of Teddy's turquoise head weaving through the crowd. When he saw Hilda and his grandmother, a smile lit up his face and he rushed forward. When he stopped in front of them, he wrapped his arms around Hilda before quickly turning to hug his grandmother.

Hilda and Teddy spent a few more minutes on the platform talking to Andromeda before Hilda had the strength and energy to apparate them back to the United States. By that evening, Hilda was settling Teddy in his room before heading to bed.

...

The week with Teddy flew by. Before Hilda knew it, it was Saturday. Teddy would be on the Hogwarts Express, headed back to Hogwarts tomorrow. They had spent the week visiting some of Teddy's favorite places int the Pacific Northwest. Teddy loved hiking in the Mount Hood National forest, but Hilda wasn't in any condition to go hiking and she didn't know anyone who could take her godson. They made plans to do that over the summer when Teddy and Andromeda would visit.

Monday and Tuesday were spent driving up and down the Oregon coast with stops in all the beach towns. Wednesday was spent in Seattle, visiting Pike Street Market and eating lunch at the Space Needle. Thursday was spent in downtown Portland with a trip to Powell's Book Store where Teddy bought his weight in books. Friday was spent in Washington Park, visiting the Oregon Zoo and the Japanese Gardens. The plan for Saturday was a trip to the park blocks and a quiet evening around her house.

Those plans changed the moment Hilda slipped in the shower. Teddy heard the impact from his room and he came running. He quickly dialed 9-1-1, and the fire department arrived a few minutes later with an ambulance a few minutes behind and the police coming.

Hilda was being loaded into the back of the ambulance when a flashing police car showed up with a familiar Asian police sergeant was climbing out. She didn't pay too much attention to him because was too busy answering the questions the paramedics were asking her while trying to calm Teddy down.

His eyes were red and he was balling. His worry warmed Hilda's heart. She had never doubt Teddy loved her, but she didn't know how much until now. Seconds later, the ambulance was speeding off to the hospital Hilda requested.

At the hospital, she was unloaded and rushed inside. There were a series of questions asked, medical words thrown around, and a few tests. At some point, Sergeant Wu and his partner, Franco, showed up to look after Teddy. By the time Andromeda arrived an hour later, Hilda had passed out.

...

Hilda woke up two days later. Andromeda and Teddy were still there. Andromeda wasn't willing to leave her side, deciding to care for Hilda herself, and Teddy refused to return to Hogwarts. Hilda was too important for them to leave her side. Surprisingly, Andromeda agreed. Teddy was going to finish the year in Portland with Hilda teaching him while Andromeda ran Hilda's cafe and handled most of her affairs.

It was after lunch the following day when Sergeant Wu showed up. "How are you feeling?" he asked.

Hilda shrugged. "I'm ready to go home," she joked with a laugh. She hated hospital, and she was ready to go home the second she was allowed. Hilda wouldn't do anything to jeopardize the health of her baby.

Wu cracked a weak smile at her joke. "How's the baby?" he asked, sounding concerned.

Hilda bit her lip. Did Wu know the baby was Nick's? Probably not. The only person who knew about the baby being Nick's, in his life, was Hank.

"She's fine," Hilda replied. "I'm supposed to relieve my stress levels, and I'm going on bed rest in a few weeks – sooner if Andromeda gets her way."

Wu nodded, looking relieved. "We were worried," he stated.

"'We'?" Hilda repeated, hoping that included Nick.

"Franco and me," he replied. "We were the ones to arrive to the scene. Some others at the station know."

Hilda gave him a weak smile. So either Nick didn't know or he didn't care.

"Well, let them know I'm fine," she said. "I won't be around the cafe for a while, but Andomeda will be running it."

Wu nodded, patting her knee.

"Oh, and Wu," she called as he turned to leave the room, "you and Franco can have free coffee for a few months – something around the tune to a few hundred dollars each."

A look of surprise crossed Wu's face. He nodded, stunned. That was a lot of coffee and food, but it was important to Hilda. Her business wouldn't suffer, and she could write some of it off as a donation on her taxes.

Hilda leaned back against her pillows, trying to get comfortable.

...

Nick didn't show up a the hospital. Both Wu and Franco made another visit before she was released on Friday. She went home with via taxi with Andromeda and Teddy on either side of her. Hilda was settling in on the couch, pulling Teddy's Charm textbook out while her godson curled up next to her under Andromeda's watchful eyes and ears as the older woman prepared dinner.

After her stay in the hospital, Hilda really wanted a home-cooked meal. Hospital food wasn't horrible, but she wanted something home-cooked. Andromeda decided to cook since she didn't want to risk anything happening to Hilda. The younger woman was willing to take it easy for a few days, but she would be back to cooking within a week.

Andromeda served Hilda in the living room while instructing Teddy to get his own from the kitchen. The doorbell rang, and Andromeda headed over to the door. Teddy got up to serve himself dinner.

Hilda could hear Andromeda open the door and talk to whoever was there. The person at the door spoke fast, so Hilda didn't bother trying to follow the conversation.

Teddy returned to the couch, curling up on Hilda's side.

The talking at the door increased in volume. Hilda sighed, debating her options: she could get up and see what the problem was, or she could stay here, where she comfortable and cozy. She decided to stay where she was. It was the easiest option.

"–I need to see her," Nick's voice shouted, forming butterflies in her chest.

Sighing, Hilda closed her eyes as she tried to find some form of inner strength. Of course she still had feelings for him. They wouldn't disappear overnight. "It's fine, Andromeda," she called.

Nick was running into the room a second later. He stopped in front of Hilda and looked relieved when he saw her. Kneeling in front of her, Nick placed his hands on her stomach.

"I heard you were in the hospital," he whispered. "I was worried."

Andromeda motioned for Teddy to leave the room with her, wanting to give Hilda and Nick some privacy. Clearly, they needed to talk.

"I was released this afternoon," Hilda said, leaning back.

Nick moved to seat beside her on the couch, his arms wrapping around her body. "Why didn't you call me?" he whispered, holding her close.

"It didn't occur to me," she answered. "I slipped, Teddy found me and I went to the hospital." She shrugged. Those memories were a little fuzzy.

"I woke up on Monday," she continued. "I had Teddy and Andromeda to deal with. Wu visited me on Wednesday, and I realzied no one had mentioned you, but I assumed you knew – he mentioned something about people at the station being worried."

"If I'd known I would have been there," Nick said, his voice cracking. "Hank was with Wu getting coffee this afternoon. Carly mentioned that they were thankful Wu and Franco were there for you. Wu told Hank and Hank told me thirty minutes ago."

Nick buried his head in Hilda's shoulder, inhaling her scent. Something wet hit her neck, and her heart warmed. Nick was crying. He cared about her at least.

A bitter smile crossed her lips. "I'm fine," she said, "and the baby's fine."

"You are, this time," he agreed. His eyes were filled with worry. "Next time, I will be here," he promised.

"Don't worry about it," Hilda said, looking away. A lump was forming in her throat and her eyes started to burn. "Teddy and Andromeda are staying with me. They'll look after us."

Something crossed Nick's face that Hilda couldn't place from the corner of her eyes. "I want to be here," he whispered.

Closing her eyes, Hilda took a few deep breaths. "You can come over tomorrow for dinner," she offered.

Nick's shoulders sagged in defeat before he agreed. He shared a long kiss with Hilda before leaving.

...

Later that night, after Teddy went to bed, Hilda and Andromeda were alone and going over payroll and inventory.

"He's crazy about you," Andromeda stated, staring at Hilda with grey eyes.

She sighed, fiddling with her pen. "He's in love with Juliette," she whispered. "It won't work out long term."

"You'll never know unless you try," Andromeda urged, placing her hand on Hilda's. "Take the chance."

"I'll think about it," Hilda promised with a tight smile.

They went back to talking about the cafe for twenty minutes before calling it a night.

"Dromeda," Hilda said, turning to face the older woman from the stairs.

"Yes?" Andromeda said, stopping to face her.

"You might want to know he's the Grimm," the younger woman stated.

Andromeda's eyes widened.

"He's the one the wesen whisper about in the cafe," she explained. "He wasn't raised to be 'traditional.' He's more interested in justice and protecting innocent people – since it is his job."

She paused, eyeing the older woman. Andromeda was older and she had grown up hearing tales about Grimms. "He even knows about me," she added in a soft tone.

Andromeda nodded, her eyes remaining wide. Hearing there was a Grimm around made her want to run and hide, seeking refuge in London, but she tried Hilda. She knew the other woman would never do anything to endanger Teddy. If she said the Grimm was a good man, then Andromeda trusted her.

...

Things with Nick went slow. For some reason, Hilda wasn't willing to move as quickly as last time. Maybe it had something to do with Nick running from her instead of turning her offer to move in down. It might have had something do with Teddy and Andromeda staying with her, and wanting to protect them. For whatever reason, Hilda wanted things to go slower.

Nick, on the other hand, wanted everything to return to the way it was. He wanted to stay at her house more often, and he wanted her to accompany him to work functions.

He was thrilled to learn they were having a daughter. They spent a few hours discussing names. It was a mutual agreement that they won't name their daughter after a family member – therefore Lily, Marie, and Kelly were out.

As they came back together, Hilda noticed something about Nick had changed. He was little harder. He was more protective, and he moved faster than before. Other changes included his enhanced hearing and reflexes. Without knowing any better, Hilda assumed it was related to his Grimm genes. She knew everything a Grimm experienced and lived through left a mark, making the Grimm stronger and deadlier.

Another thing she noticed was Nick was more open.

They were talking more these days. Nick explained everything that was going on with Juliette. Hilda's blood ran cold when she learned a Royal was in Portland. The Royal turned out to be a bastard half-zauberbiest son, Sean Renard. He was Nick's boss and a captain within the Portland Police Department.

Nick wanted her to meet some of his wesen friends: Mornoe, a blutbad, and Rosalee, a fuchsbau. Hilda was reluctant to meet them. They were Nick's friends, and they sounded fond of Juliette. When Juliette got better, they would probably support her and Nick getting back together.

...

Hilda met Rosalee first. A customer at the cafe had an emergency that required something at the apothecary. Andromeda had requested Hilda get it and come by the cafe. The only wesen apothecary she knew about in the city was The Exotic Spice and Tea Shop. Hilda had been by a few times. Freddy seemed nice enough, though he did business with some shady wesen.

When she entered the store, Hilda found a redhead behind the counter, scribbling away in a book. "One moment," she said without looking up.

Hilda looked around the shop. Most of the things on displace looked muggle. She noticed a few English teas, including a pumpkin spice.

"Thank you for waiting," the woman behind the counter said as she looked up, offering a polite smile. "What can I get you?"

"I have a list," Hilda said, handing the woman a folded piece of paper.

The woman took it, unfolding the paper and reading the contains. With the list in hand, she turned and got to work collecting everything.

While the woman was collecting the things, the door opened. Hilda glanced over her shoulder and raised an eyebrow as Hank entered with Nick behind him.

Nick's eyes lit up at the sight of Hilda. Rushing passed Hank, he placed his hands on her cheeks and pulled Hilda into a kiss. It was short. "Hi," he greeted her after separating. His hands remained on her cheeks, keeping her face close to his.

"Good morning," Hilda said with a smile.

Rubbing his thumb on her cheek, Nick quickly pulled her into another kiss.

Behind he counter something crashed, startling Hilda into pulling away from Nick. She turned to see the woman standing there with her eyes wide and in woge, looking between Nick and Hilda.

"Hey Rosalee," Hank greeted, trying to things from getting awkward.

The woman, Rosalee, returned to her normal state a second or two later. "Nick?" she asked, glancing at him. The confusion in her voice was clear.

That's when Hilda recognized the woman. Nick had told her about Rosalee and Monroe.

"This is Hilda," he said, placing a hand on the baby bump.

"H-how far along are you?" Rosalee asked, awkwardness and tension thick in the air.

"Almost five months," Hilda answered with a smile smile, fondly glancing at her bump.

Rosalee nodded, clearly uncertain of what to do.

Hilda was happy to escape the apothecary a few minutes later with her purchases in a paper bag. Nick followed her outside to give her a few kisses before he was forced to return to the shop. Apparently, he was the middle of something involving a ziegevolk lawyer.

...

As Hilda and Teddy spent the afternoon in the park blocks near the Portland Art Museum, she spotted Rosalee and a man with brown hair watching them from a bench. Teddy was running around, playing with a few other children while Hilda was skimming over his History of Magic textbook. It had been years since she attended Hogwarts, and she needed to refresh her memory before teaching Teddy.

Over the course of an hour, Hilda would glance up from the textbook to check on her godson and eye their stalkers. She was surprised to find Rosalee and the man walking towards her. Marking the page, she patiently waited for them to approach her.

"I take it you're Monroe," Hilda stated when Rosalee and man stopped in front. Closing the book, she placed it on her lap.

The man nodded, looking a little caught off guard.

Sighing, Hilda folded her hands together. "What do you want?" she asked, sounding tired.

"What's your relationship with Nick?" Monroe asked, sounding protective of his friend.

Despite the situation, Hilda smiled to herself. It was nice to know there were protective people in Nick's life. "Complicated," Hilda answered, narrowing her green eyes. "We slept together and I got pregnant. I know it's only a matter of time before Nick returns to Juliette."

Monroe and Rosalee were surprised by her answer. They shared a look.

"I know he loves her," she said, shaking her head. "Me being pregnant doesn't change that. Nick deserves to be happy."

Rosalee looked away while Monroe swallowed.

"What kind of woman are you?" the blutbad asked, his tone confused.

Shrugging, Hilda replied, "Unusual."

"Hilda," Teddy said, his tone protective and his eyes flashing amber, as he walked over to his godmother, "are you alright?"

"All's good, go play," Hilda gently told him, smiling.

Teddy didn't move. He glared at Monroe and Rosalee.

"Don't start anything, love," Hilda warned him. "He's a mature blutbad."

Twin looks of surprise passed over Monroe's and Rosalee's faces.

Growling, Teddy's eyes narrowed further and his face started to shift.

"Teddy!" Hilda growled. "Behave."

As soon as he started to woge, he stopped, but he continued to glare at Monroe.

"You'll have to forgive him," Hilda said, shaking her head. "He's overprotective and young – a horrible combination if you're on the wrong end."

"What is he?" Rosalee asked. The boy didn't fully woge, and what she had seen shift, she didn't recognize.

"Mondkind-zauberhaft hybrid," she answered.

Both Monroe's and Rosalee's eyes widened.

"Don't confuse mondkinder with mondwölfe and zauberhaft with zauberbiest," Hilda added, a sharpness in her tone.

"Hybrids aren't common," Rosalee commented. "Especially zauberhaft."

"You only need to know where to look," Hilda said, standing up. "We're a hidden society and don't like interacting with other wesen."

Without another word, Hilda and Teddy left, leaving a stunned wesen couple behind them. Nick didn't tell Monroe and Rosalee a lot about Hilda. They knew he was getting serious about the woman and she was pregnant, but that was about it.

Learning Nick was involved with a wesen woman was mind-blowing. It was one thing to know Nick was friends with wesen, but it was another to learn he was sleeping with wesen woman and he was expecting a half-wesen child with the same woman. In fact, they both knew Nick was excited about the baby.

...

One night a few weeks later, Nick turned up late. Andromeda let him in without a word, use to his late night appearances. He had a habit of just dropping by. Hilda would smile when he came, and Andromda loved seeing the younger woman so happy.

That night, he ran up to Hilda's room. He stripped down to his boxers before crawling into bed with her. Nick said nothing as he pulled her close, removing her clothes. They didn't have sex. He just wanted to feel her for a little before they started talking. Juliette had finally succeeded in breaking his heart. Monroe and Hank were going to help him pack his remaining belongings at Juliette's house tomorrow.

"You can keep some of it here," Hilda promised.

The smile that formed on Nick's lips knocked the breath out of her lungs. It was open and sincere. Looking back, it was this moment when Hilda knew she meant everything to Nick.

"I think it's time we discuss you moving in," she continued. "You should be around more with our daughter coming."

Nick's hand caressed the baby bump before he pulled her into a long kiss. "You're amazing," he whispered, fingering ghosting over the baby bump.

...

Things changed between Nick and Hilda after that night. It seemed that their relationship was changing every other week these days. This time, the change was promising. While Nick didn't fully move in, he started leaving things around Hilda's house and he stayed over most nights. In fact, he had a key, allowing him to come and go as he pleased.

Most nights, Nick would crawl into bed with Hilda late at night. From what she understood, he was likely coming from the trailer. Nick had mentioned the trailer to her a few times though she had yet to see it. The pair discussed the possibility of Nick bringing the trailer and storing it on her large property. She had plenty of space.

Nick had started joining Hilda and Teddy for magic lessons. He would watch in wonder with wide eyes as Hilda effortlessly preformed magic with her wand. Listening to the lessons, Nick would ask his own questions and he would offer his own thoughts and opinions. Hilda would smile as she witnessed Nick and Teddy bonding.

With Nick around, his friends started visiting. Hilda and Hank got along well. Rosalee and Monroe were making an effort to get to know her and they were welcoming. They just wanted what was best for Nick.

...

When Hank left town for a vacation in Hawaii, Hilda found herself pulled into Nick's Grimm duties. He came home with a frown, carrying a large book.

"What can you tell me about Volcanalis?" he asked, opening the book. He showed her a page with large drawing of fiery figure. "Monroe said he knew it as el diablo."

Green eyes narrowed as Hilda pulled the book towards her, studying the drawing of the fiery demon before reading the entry on the other page.

"I thought he was a myth," she muttered, turning her attention to the drawing. Glancing up at Nick, "Can I take a picture of this?"

He nodded, following her movements as she pulled her cell phone out to snap a picture.

"I only know what my friend Luna told me," she said, turning her attention back to Nick. "Volcanalis is responsible for more than just Pompeii. Luna can list three other disasters." Hilda shook her head before running her fingers through her dark hair. "You best course of action will be to extinguish him."

Nodding, Nick asked, "What would you recommend?"

Looking down at the drawing, a Gryffindor-like idea formed in her mind. "I would say freezing him, literally," she answered. "There is a saying about hell freezing over."

"You think just like your fathers," Andromeda Tonks said, entering the room. She held a fond look in her grey eyes as she studied the younger woman.

Andromead's use of the word fathers caught Nick's attention. As far as he knew Hilda's parents were James and Lily. He filed the information away to inquire about later – once Volcanalis was taken care of.

"Can you think of anything better?" Hilda asked the older woman, a slight challenge in her tone.

"I can improve your idea," Andromeda stated, crossing her arms. Her eyes flashed purple, challenging the other woman.

Hilda's eyes glowed in response.

Nick glanced between the pair. This was the first he was seeing of either women woge. According to his ancestors' journals and books, zauberhaft typically had purple, silver, and gold eyes.

"You should make a few Gelida Potions," the older woman instructed. While Hilda wasn't the potions student at Hogwarts, she made stronger zaubertränke due to her stronger magical core and abilities.

Green eyes narrowed, silently asking for an explanation.

"A Gelida Potion is one of the coldest things in the world," Andromeda explained. "If Nick can combine that with something colder, it should create a faster freezing effect."

Nick nodded, looking between the pair. "I was thinking liquid nitrogen," he said.

"I'll get started on the potion," Hilda stated as she pulled out the Elder Wand. She kept the entry to her potions lab hidden. "I should have the potion done in a few hours. Should I brew one liter or two?"

"Two, just to be safe," Andromeda replied. "It's better to have too much than not enough."

With a nod, Hilda left the living room for the basement.

As Hilda was decreased the heat on her copper cauldron to let the potion simmer for an hour, Nick came into the potions lab. He had come in a few times to observe Teddy's lessons.

Walking up behind her, Nick wrapped his arms around her hips, pulling her against his body.

"How's it going?" he asked, his breath hot against her ear and neck.

"Good, I think," she answered, leaning into his embrace. "The potion needs to simmer for an hour before I can add the yeti fur."

"So, you have an hour and nothing to do?" he whispered, his teeth biting into the lobe of her ear.

"I'm sure I can think of other pressing issues," Hilda whispered, closing her green eyes as she felt Nick unbuttoning her jeans.

An hour and a half later, Hilda was bottling up the potion under Nick's watchful gaze. He left her house with the potions after giving her a long kiss.

...

"Are you coming over tonight?" Hilda asked, setting a plate of food in front of Teddy.

"Yeah," Nick answered, pouring himself a cup of decaf coffee. "Your cooking's better than Monroe's."

Hilda smiled. Monroe was a vegan and Nick wasn't. Of course her cooking was better. "I'm thinking chicken," she said.

"Sounds great," he said, kissing her cheek. His cell phone rang as he was sitting down. He answered it. When the call ended, he stood up and he quickly downed the rest of his coffee.

"New case?" Hilda asked, taking a seat at the island.

"Hank's back," he replied, placing his mug in the dishwasher. "He wants to meet for breakfast."

Nodding, Hilda tilted her head back, silently requesting a kiss.

With a fond smile, Nick leaned down, giving her a peck.

Hilda pouted, wanting than a simple peck.

Laughing, Nick pulled on his jacket before he pressed a longer kiss to Hilda's lips. "I gotta run," he told her. "I'll see you tonight."

Hilda and Teddy spent the day around the house. The farther along she got in pregnancy, the more time she spent at home. It was better than bed rest, which Andromeda wanted her on, and Teddy didn't care what they did. He wanted her to be safe and her baby to be healthy.

A little before noon, Nick called.

"Hey you," Hilda greeted with a fond smile as she answered her phone.

"Hey," Nick said, sounding odd.

Frowning, she asked, "What's going on?"

Nicked sighed and took a little before answering, "Juliette called me."

"Oh," Hilda said, trying to sound neutral as her eyes widened in surprise. Juliette calling was the last thing she expected after she told Nick to leave her alone over a month ago. "What did she want?"

"She wants to have dinner and talk," Nick explained. "I don't know what to do."

Biting her lip, Hilda rubbed a hand over their daughter as she thought. This was one of those crossroads where Nick could choose either her or Juliette. "Maybe you should go over," she said. Hilda did not want to say that, but Nick deserved to know where he stood with Juliette.

"Really?" The disbelief was strong in Nick's voice.

"Yes," she forced herself to reply. "You still love her, and this could be what you need."

Nick stayed quiet for a little before agreeing he would go have dinner with Juliette. "I'll be over later tonight," he promised before hanging up.

As she put her own phone down, Hilda broke down crying. She placed both hands on her bump as she tried to find comfort in her daughter. At least when Nick returned to Juliette, Hilda would have their daughter. Due to their daughter, Hilda would forever be in Nick's life – no matter how Juliette or another woman felt about that.

...

It was much later when Nick crawled into her bed. Thoughts and insecurities kept Hilda up, playing on an endless loop in her mind. Was Nick going to leave her tonight?

"How was your evening?" she asked. Hilda was dying to know what happened between Nick and his ex-girlfriend. She was laying on her side with her back to him.

"Why? It's none of your business," Nick snapped, sounding hostile.

Rolling onto her back, she turned to look at him. It was clear things hadn't gone well between Nick and Juliette tonight. That made her happy, but she was concerned about Nick. "It's not," she admitted, "but I want to make sure you're alright."

"I'm fine," Nick snapped, getting up from the bed, "not that you care."

Green eyes clenched shut at Nick's words. Both the words and the tone were hard to hear. "You know that's not true," she whispered.

"Yes, it is," he declared, standing over her side of the bed. His eyes narrowed.

Opening her eyes, a few tears slid down her cheeks. "Nick," she whispered, her tone soft, "I care about you."

"No, you don't," he growled.

With a sigh, Hilda braced herself with her arms on the bed before pushing herself up into the sitting position. "Why would you say that?" she whispered.

"You keep pushing me away, towards Juliette."

Hilda took a deep breath and she closed her eyes, trying to find strength. When her eyes opened, she gazed into Nick's eyes. "I want you to be happy," she told her, her tone soft and her voicing wavering with emotion. "You deserve to be happy."

"Why do you care?" Nick demanded, his eyes narrowed and his tone dark.

Taking a deep breath, Hilda whispered, "I love you. I want you to be happy even if it's not with me." A few tears slid down her cheeks. "I love you, and it breaks my heart to know you love someone else."

Something in Nick's demeanor changed with his eyes softening. As quick as something changed, it was gone. The soft look was replaced by cold, hard indifference.

The sudden change made Hilda sob as she stared at him. Her eyes changed – the left one turning white and the right turning black – as she found herself sliding into Nick's mind.

Nick's mind was a place of organized chaos, imagines flashing by as words echoed. Within a minute of her arrival, Hilda found a glowing blue force that didn't belong. It was foreign, trying to push itself to the forefront of Nick's thoughts and take over everything.

With a frown, Hilda reached out to touch it. Her fingers barely brushed against it before she found herself forcibly expelled from Nick's mind.

When she came back to herself, Hilda found Nick was storming out of her bedroom. She remained in bed for a moment before she threw her covers off and climbed out of bed. Something was in Nick's mind, trying to manipulate and control him.

Hilda pulled on her robe before she grabbed her cell phone and the Elder Wand. As she stuffed her feet into slippers, she dialed Hank's number. He didn't answer, so Hilda left a message. "Something's wrong with Nick," she said before launching into a description of his behavior. She kept the details of his mind to herself.

Ending the call, she slid the cell phone into the front pocket of her robe as she left her bedroom. She had some research to do.

...

A few hours later, Hilda was deep into her research when Hank called. She needed to come down to the Third Precinct. He knew what was wrong with Nick. Hilda was rushing to her bedroom before ending the phone call with Hank. She quickly changed into a pair of yoga pants, a cami, and a blouse. Teddy was only steps behind Hilda as she climbing into her car. Her godson refused to leave her side when they left the house. His protective insists were working in overdrive.

The drive wasn't too long. She was quick to throw the car into park and grab the keys before rushing inside the building. Hilda was half a step in when Hank noticed, motioning her over. It was faster if she went to him since he was on crutches with a bad leg. (Later this would make her smile as she recalled the time at six months pregnant she could move around faster than the black detective.)

"He's gone crazy," Hank said, explaining the situation in the cliff notes version that included Nick being under the influence of a musai.

As she listened, Hilda made a mental note to contact Luna, who specialized in different wesen types. She followed Hank to the holding cells where they found Nick with his gun out and pointed at a man, Anton according to Hank.

"Drop it, Hank," Hank ordered, pulling out his own gun. He stood protectively in front of Hilda.

"He needs to die," Nick yelled, glaring at the imprisoned man.

"Nick," Hilda called, stepped to the side of Hank.

Nick glanced over at her before returning his attention to Anton.

"Please, stop this," Hilda pleaded, slowly walking towards him. "You'll regret it if you kill. You're not that type of Grimm."

Nick kept his attention trained on Anton.

"Nick, please, look at me," she pleaded, reaching out to touch Nick's face. "Give me the gun."

His eyes closed and his hands started to shake. "H-Hilda," he said slowly. Turning, he opened his eyes, meeting Hilda's green ones. He stared into her eyes for a moment before he dropped the gun. It fell to the ground, inches away from the cell.

Reaching out, Nick rushed to pull Hilda into his arms. He buried his face into the curve of her collar, inhaling her scent.

From her view over his shoulder, Hilda summoned Nick's gun before Anton could move to grab it. She returned the gun to the holster on Nick's hip before she wrapped her arms around him.

Pulling back from her neck, Nick caught her lips in a kiss. His tongue was pushing into her mouth when the door slammed open.

Nick reluctantly pulled away from her to see Renard entering with his gun drawn. Monroe and Juliette were a few steps behind him. Renard looked relieved when he saw Nick and Hilda standing there with their arms wrapped around one another and Hank standing off to the side with Teddy. Monroe smiled, relieved himself as he took in the sight of his friend. Juliette glared at the pair, something settling onto her face – something unpleasant.

An hour later found Nick pushing Hilda onto her bed as he removed his shirt before straddling her hips.

He rested his hands on the baby bump, staring deeply into Hilda's eyes as he whispered, "Being here with you two makes me happy."

Green eyes widen as Hilda processed those words. "D-do you remember everything?" she whispered.

Nick responded by pulling her into a deep kiss as he worked on removed bra.

...

After the musai, Nick made a point to spend more time with Hilda. When they were together, he kept an arm wrapped around her waist or a hand on her knee. He developed a habit of pulling her into a kiss that rendered her breathless whenever he wanted, which happened regularly. Pulling back, he kept her face cupped into his hands, allowing him to stare into her green eyes before he would press another kiss to her lips.

"I don't love her, anymore," Nick whispered one day before pulling Hilda into a long kiss. When they separated, Nick told her, "Juliette's in the past. You're my future." His hand run over her belly. "You're the one I want."

Overwhelmed by his confessions, Hilda closed her eyes as she stared to cry. "I love you," she whispered.

In response, Nick pulled into another kiss. While he wasn't in love with her, he was falling and it was only a matter of time before he could return those words.

...

Hilda learned that Juliette remembered everything about Nick and she wanted to get back together from Monroe and Rosalee. Nick was aware of the situation, and he decided to keep the information to himself instead of sharing with Hilda. He understood how insecre she was about their relationship, and he didn't want to give her a reason to doubt them. When she learned the truth, Hilda kept it to herself as she studied Nick. There was something different between.

Nick was working late one night – something about victims have their organs sucked dry – when Hilda experienced the displeasure of running into Juliette at the grocery store with Teddy.

Hilda and Teddy were busy looking over the ice cream selection with a cart full of healthy food and decaf coffee nearby. They were limited to two flavors. Nick and Andromeda were keeping an annoyingly close eye on Hilda's diet.

"How does triple brownie sound?" Teddy asked, eyeing the chocolaty ice cream with hunger. His devotion to all things chocolate was pure Remus. It made Hilda smile.

Hilda shrugged. It didn't sound bad, but it wasn't what she wanted. Since she was hunger, the ice creams were dependent on her cravings. Teddy's didn't mind because he loved ice cream.

Looking over the different brands, Hilda decided she wanted Tillamook ice cream. Her favorite flavor was grandma's cake batter. In fact, that sounded amazing! If this store didn't have it then Andromeda was apparating to Tillamook to visit the Cheese Factory.

"Do you see grandma's cake batter?" she asked Teddy, browsing the dozens of flavors.

Teddy's eyes narrowed as he looked over the selection.

Hilda let out a sound of triumph when she finally found grandma's cake batter a few minutes later. Awkwardly, she bent over to grab the container. When she stood back up, turning to face her godson, Hilda found herself staring at Juliette Silverton.

"What are you doing with Nick?" Juliette demanded with her hands on her hips.

Green eyes narrowed. "That's none of your business," Hilda said, forcing herself to remain calm.

"It is," Juliette argued. "He's my boyfriend."

"He's your ex-boyfriend," Hilda crossed. "You broke up with him."

Juliete's eyes narrowed.

Teddy came up next to his godmother, glaring at Juliette. "We should go," he said, grabbing Hilda's hand. "You said something about making chicken pesto for dinner."

Glancing down at Teddy, Hilda sighed and she allowed Teddy to led her away from the other woman.

Over dinner that night, Hilda told Nick about her day. He tensed at the mention of his ex-girlfriend.

"You have nothing to worry about," he quickly reassured her. "I want you."

Taking a deep breath, Hilda rested her hand on top of his. "I know," she told him with a smile. "I'll just need you to remind me of that from time to time."

Nick returned her smile.

...

A week later found Nick working a strange case where dead people weren't actually dead. These people appeared to be dead – no pulse, no heartbeat, and they looked dead. They were something like zombies being controlled by someone else.

Nick spent a night away, researching in his aunt's trailer until the early morning hours. After leaving the trailer, he spent the night at Hank's house since Monroe had a date night with Rosalee. The next day passed with little communication from. He called and texted a few times, but he couldn't talk long. In the second phone call of the day, he mentioned the captain's brother was in town which Hilda's heartbeat skyrocketing.

As a Black, any mentions of a Royal added stress and anxiety. There wasn't a good history between the Royal Families and the Blacks'. Biting her lip, Hilda realized she needed to share the Black Family History with Nick. He deserved to know. After all, his daughter would be the Heiress of the Black Family. Once people realized was from the Black Family, there would be a target on her back. She would be the first of her kind, descended from a Royal line, a Grimm line and a zauberhaft-hexenbiest hybrid line.

That following night, Monroe and Rosalee came over. They explained everything. There was a cracher-mortel in Portland, and he was turning people into puppets. Apparently, Hank and Nick took a zombie-puppet to the Spice Shop so Monroe and Rosalee could save the man. They were able to find a treatment and it was successful. Then a few hours ago, Nick took Monroe and Rosalee to a container yard and they found a lot of the cracher-mortel's victims. They got separated from Nick, and Nick ran after the cracher-mortel.

As Hilda responded what they said and rubbed her belly, Andromeda started to curse.

"We need reinforcements," Andromeda stated, "and you might to contact Susan Bones."

Hilda frowned.

"It's time the Blacks returned to the Royals," the older woman stated, crossing her arms. There was a dark look in her grey eyes.

Rosalee woged as she looked at the three, her eyes darting from Teddy to Andromeda to Hilda. "Do you mean the Blacks of Pendragon?" she asked, her voice a little high pitched.

"Yes," Andromeda replied.

"I thought they were all killed," Monroe stated. The Pendragons were the eighth Royal line that died off in the sixth century, before the time of the Crusades. According to legend, the Blacks of Pendragon were deceased from King Arthur.

"All but one were killed," Hilda answered. The only survivor was the daughter of the king's bastard son. The Black name came from the Blackwood Forest on the land that the king gifted his bastard son. That surviving daughter was taken in by the Emrys family. In fact, she went onto marry the grandson of Merlin.

"I'll handle this," Andromeda said, motioning for Hilda to leave the room.

Less than an hour later, Luna Lovegood arrived on her front porch with Rolf Scamander, Susan Bones, Terence Higgs, and Sally Birchgrove.

"Andromeda, we need to talk," Susan Bones said the moment she stepped into the house. "House Bones stands with House Potter as we have for centuries. House Bones is proud to call House Black friend and kin."

Terence and Sally were quick to reaffirm their alliance and friendship with both House Black and House Potter. The Birchgrove were kin to the Potter family and the Higgs owed their lineages to the Blacks.

"Hilda, you have the most interesting friends," Luna said in greeting. Her voice was as dreamy as ever and she smiled as she stared at Monroe and Rosalee. "A blutbad and a fuchsbau." Her silver eyes turned to Hilda, lingering on her stomach. "She'll make you proud."

Hilda slowly returned Luna's smile and she pulled the younger woman into a hug. Susan, Terence, and Sally were quick to exchange hugs were her. Introductions were made and plans were laid out before Mornoe placed a phone call to Hank.
