"He left for Thailand. He chose going there with kids from a high school instead of being with me." Her eyes aren't necessarily dead, and she isn't going underneath her desk, so Toby gives a genuine smile, showing actual teeth.

"Well, he didn't want kids, did he?" Toby does that thing where he scratches behind his ear, and Kelly gives him a wounded look like she might think he said that to make her feel bad.

Toby picks up on it. "No, I just meant that, well, come on Kelly. He didn't want what you wanted. So he obviously wasn't right for you."

Kelly looks at the floor for a second, then back at him. Toby forgets to expect something like "I just thought he was the one, you know?"

Toby doesn't want to hear that because at one point, his ex-wife may have said the same thing.

"Yeah. That's true," she says. Then she walks back to her desk and answers the phone, ringing in their silence like a little kid tugging on the sleeve of her new blouse.

"Customer Service, this is Truly Scrumptious."

Toby lets out an unexpected, sudden laugh, because she hasn't answered the phone as someone else in a long time.
