Author's Note: The idea came from the teaser from Maelstorm where Starbuck mentions to Helo that she has nightmares every night. So I want this to take place sometime before Maelstorm. And be gentle this is a first for me in attempting my first Battlestar Galactica fic.
"We all dream; we do not understand our dreams, yet we act as if nothing strange goes on in our sleep minds, strange at least by comparison with the logical, purposeful doings of our minds when we are awake." - Erich Fromm
It was always the same nightmare every night every time she tried to sleep.
The steely, hotshot façade that was Starbuck the Viper pilot had fallen from her face. She was simply Kara. Kara the person—the woman who was human that had hopes and dreams, fears and doubts. And nightmares too apparently.
Kara absent mindedly played with her dog tags as she sighed disheartened thinking that she was not going to fall back asleep and get any rest that her body desired.
The dream was always so real. She could still feel the cool whit paint on her hands as she tried to paint out the symbol in frenzy. The series of circles…the eye staring at her. Then there were moments when the dream blurred. Yet she knew what happened in those dreams and she could not forget them…she could not forget…
She balled her fist around her dog tags as her thoughts trailed to darker memories of New Caprica.
She breathed deeply, trying to fight the tide of memories that threatened to come forward in a tide of emotions.
No. No.
Nothing was wrong, she told herself. Nothing. Is. Wrong.
Starbuck breathed deeply a few more moments when she felt that she had finally gotten her emotions under control. She couldn't afford to lose it.
Starbuck didn't think about it when she worked on Galactica. Without a moment's thought, she got out of her bunk to begin a very early day. Starbuck would work and go about life, as if nothing was wrong.
It was for the best, she decided with finality.
