Chapter 1
Cool air blew against my face as I flew. Total was zipped up tight inside my jacket, being quiet of once. The rest of the flock flew behind me. Gazzy had found a new toy: a soccer ball.Surprised it's not any bomb or explosive? Me too.
Fang and Iggy were flying to my right, holding Akila in an awkward position. The Voice inside my head had been quiet for awhile now. Well, we were heading for Illinois. The Voice didn't really explain why we were going there, though.
Then from behind me I herd a 'Ouch!' and an 'Oops.' I looked back right when Gazzy tucked in his wings and was darting down wards. Nudge was rubbing the side of her head and glared down as Gazzy still fell. I looked over at Angel confused.
Gazzy hit Nudge on the side of her head, I herd her explain inside my head. I nodded then looked down after Gazzy. He had snapped his wings open right when we had the soccer ball in his hands. He flew back up to us and tossed the ball from one hand to the other.
"You really need to watch where you're throwing that!" Nudge called over to Gazzy. A chuckle was his reply. I looked over to Iggy and Fang again. Iggy looked like he was wearing down. Fang was slowing down for him. I flew above them and over to Iggy's side.
"I'll take her," I called to him from over the wind. He nodded and started loosening his grip. Fang tightened his grip of the Worlds Largest Malamute while I swooped in and grabbed her before Fang could drop anymore. We would have to leave her with my mom when we visited next. This was just too hard.
"Watch it!" I herd Total, his head sticking out form the top of my jacket. I looked up at Fang, he nodded and tightened his grip on Akila while I unzipped my jacket and handed the fur ball over to Iggy. His own little wings were just poking out from his fur. I grabbed hold of Akila once again as we flew on.
"Um, guys?" I herd Iggy say over the wind, barely catching it. My and Fang looked up at him, Alert and ready. Then we herd the buzzing noise we knew only to well: Flyboys.
The three kids behind us went tense too. Gazzy was glaring back at them, his hands balled into fists. Angel had swooped over to Iggy, and Nudge angled her wings down ward and flew up above everyone.
Bad news though, Fang and I weren't able to fight, not with Akila in our hands. Our options were:
We could fly down to earth as fast as we could and then come back up and fight. But then no one will be able to watch the malamute from three hundred feet in the air, and she could get attacked and we could go help her- well, not right away anyways.
2) We could drop her, letting Total never forgive us. And we would be killing an animal, which neither Fang or I could do. We were supposed to be saving the world, right?
I nodded at Fang and yelled, "Drop!" to the rest of the flock. Fang and I folded in our wings, only the sides sticking out at our sides, so we wouldn't go too fast for Akila. The rest of the Flock followed us.
We were a good two hundred feet above the ground before the buzzing got louder. This was not good. When I looked back, the Flyboys were gaining speed- Fast. Shoot, we weren't going to make it. After putting Akila down, we still had to fly back up, and we fight better in the air. But the Flyboys would catch us just as we would jump back up into the air! This wasn't looking so good.
