Just some Kataang fluff...I seriously love this pairing so much you don't even know. :)
After a long day filled with meetings with the Republic City Council and overseeing the construction of the new probending arena, Aang was exhausted. He walked as quietly as he could up to his bedroom, for it was well past midnight and he didn't want to risk waking any of the Air Acolytes or his two children. When he reached the sliding door, he smiled, knowing that a nice, long, sleep was only a few moments away.
As he stepped into the room, he looked around. The room was cloaked in darkness, the curtain hanging over the window billowing gently with the night breeze. The familiar red comforter on the bed looked as soft as a cloud, and when he approached, he saw a rather large lump under the covers on the right side of the bed. Katara appeared to be fast asleep.
Aang removed his work clothes as quickly as possibly until he was dressed only in his undergarments. Sliding into the bed, a small, sleepy smile graced his lips once his head hit the pillow. Right as slumber was about to claim him, Katara shifted closer to him, placing her right hand over the spot where his heart should be. Sighing, he opened his eyes. Katara was still asleep, but she was still a sight to be seen. Aang had always liked watching his wife sleep, as weird as that may sound, but he couldn't help himself. She looked so much like a child when she slept, her dark hair a wild wavy mess cascading over her back and her body curled up almost into a little ball. Her long eyelashes tickled the top of her cheeks, and he mouth was a perfect pink circle, small puff of air moving out of her body as she breathed. Beautiful.
As tired as Aang was, and as much as he hated waking Katara up, he couldn't help himself. He placed his finger under her chin and kissed her, a slow, soft kiss that made Aang feel like he was floating on air. Katara's eyes flew open, the brilliant blue glowing like a lantern in the darkness of the room. She didn't stop kissing him, however. When Aang finally pulled away, his lips parted and his heart racing, he studied her face. Katara's expression was a mixture of surprise and sleepiness.
"You're home," she said groggily.
"I am," replied Aang.
"I thought you wouldn't be home until…" she yawned, pausing her sentence. "Until at least two."
"Well, it's midnight now, so I guess you could say they let me out early," Aang told her, moving one of his hands up to rest on her cheek. "I'm sorry I woke you."
Katara smiled, something Aang thought she should do much more often. She moved closer to him, nuzzling her face against his bare chest. "I don't mind," she murmured, using one of her long, slender fingers to trace the blue arrow on Aang's arm. She looked at him, her eyes glittering. "I'd much rather stay up with you than go back to sleep. I haven't seen you all day."
Aang grinned, and placed a kiss to Katara's forehead. "I have the day off tomorrow, so we can spend a ton of time together then. How does that sound?"
"Lovely." Katara's voice was becoming slower and slower as she began to fall back asleep, but she made an effort to kiss Aang's chest and whisper, "Good night, Aang."
Wrapping his arms around her, Aang said back, just as quietly, "Good night, sleepyhead." The room was once again still, the only sound that could be heard was the sound of steady breathing.
Aang thought he could lay there awake forever, even though only moments before he wanted nothing more than to fall asleep. There was no place he'd rather want to be, with his sleeping wife at his side as the sounds of Republic City at night drifted through the window. He closed his eyes once more and fell asleep with a smile.
