You'd think Jack would be used it by now. Death. The crimson pool, the metallically smell, the painful stab in the heart.
But every time death struck near him Jack felt the full effect.
Perhaps it was because it happened so often. Or maybe because he knew that death would never happen to him.
Every time after Jack had dealt with death he thought the same thing, "I won't feel this way again. It's the last time".
But in those moments when he heard the sirens go off and Tosh's exclamation that the power in the cells had been shut off Jack felt that same stab of pain.
He ran after Gwen, in the direction of the cells. He reached the door before her, afraid of her reaction to the heartbreaking scene they were likely to encounter.
He flung the door open and skidded to a stop just inside the doorway. The smell hit him first then his eyes readjusted to the dark and he saw the death in front of him.
Rhys lay limp on the floor, surrounded by a pool of blood. A scream tore through Gwen's throat and she collapsed beside her boyfriends body, hugging his lifeless form to her.
Jack knelt beside her and once again he felt tears well up in his eyes. Death always hit hard, especially when it was someone you knew or someone a loved one knew.
He reached out and placed a hand on Gwen's shoulder but she simply hugged Rhys tighter. The screams and anger poured from her mouth while the tears and misery poured from her eyes.
He tried to comfort her but to no avail so in the end he sat back on his heels and let his head bow to sit on his arms that rested on his knees.
He could feel the tears but they wouldn't come. They never came.
Gwen's screaming and sobs filled his head and he found it hard to distinguish between her pain and his own.
He watched her carefully and knew, not only her, but everyone in his team felt the pain of death and soon they would have their own chance at it and the rest would cry for them. But not Jack.
Death would befall them all in time. He would just have to idly watch them, unable to save them from their own mortality. Death was certain, but life was not. Neither of them was true for Jack, which brought him no great comfort.
Whoever had said immortality was a gift of god was far from right. It was a curse.
Immortality was a fate worse than death.
A fate Jack had to live with everyday and everyone knew; there's no changing your fate.
Or is there?

Sequel- Death Has Come – Teaser.
Jack took a deep breath, "Alright. Code blue. Agent missing".
An agent's missing.
-----
"Who are you?", Jack snarled at the man. He observed Jack and his team, one was missing. The man smiled calmly, "I'm death. Death's come for you, Jack Harkness".
Death's coming.
----
"You can't save everyone", the man told them almost kindly, "She's dead, because of you. And a lot more will follow her fate".
And there's nothing they can do to stop any of it.
-----------
So what does all this have to do with Jack?
He thought he could outrun death but now someone he loves is paying his ultimate price. Now Jack has to change fate to get back the ones he loves but is he willing to give the ultimate sacrifice?
