In her country, they are signs of who you are. They tell the desert world who's family they belong to, and express their individuality.
On women, tattoos on the back of the shoulder blade represent your lover.
They will pierce their ears, noses, bellies, eyebrows, nipples and tongues, and ink any skin they can. More adventurous people will get their septum done, their chin, cheek, the web of their tongue (1), or skin.
She likes the basics.
Most people see the lobe piercings and the helix, (2) and maybe, if she lunges, they will see the jewel in her belly.
Under her glove, she has a heart-shaped clump of microdermals (3)
They won't see the wings tattooed into her back, the symbol of her being Cid's daughter, or the chocobo tattoo on her side.
Apart from Him.
Her Knight in shining armour, who swept her off her feet into the sunset . . .
Or that's what she hoped.
Instead, she was disowned by her Father, the only reminder of her heritage, the wings on her back.
So they keep their taboo relationship out of sight, and for her Father, out of mind.
Three months later, Summoner Yuna and her Guardians were preparing to face Sin the next day. Most of the Guardians were sleeping in preparation. But two of them sat upon the bed in one of the cabins.
"So that's four on your right ear, and three on your left" His calloused hands massaged her ears and then ran down her neck, past her shoulders to rest on her hips.
"One on your belly, that's eight so far" His hands then trailed down her arms, making her shiver, "Then you have ten of those things to make a heart and that's eighteen, Yevon, that is a lot."
"Shush you"
A topless Rikku sat on one of the Airships bunkers, holding the duvet up to cover herself.
Behind her, sat Auron, counting the number of piercings she had, and, for the first time, was absolutely stunned.
"I can't believe this is normal for the AlBhed!"
"This isn't normal. Most have far worse than me! I mean, have you seen Brother?"
He laughed, but stopped abruptly as Rikku turned around to face him, and dropped the duvet.

(2) Helix - That top bit of your ear, the cartilage
(3) Microdermals - Um, hard to describe, look at this picture-
