This is mainly my view on why Selena would have turned against her husband, but also because I wanted to try to explain part of who Morzan was, and partly because I haven't written about Alagaesia for a while now... I hope you guys like it!
It was not the first time.
The man turned his back to the shivering woman on the floor and rested his hands on the polished desk. His knuckles grew steadily whiter as he clenched the wood, and there was dried blood on his hand. Pain coursed through him, and he knew he was feeling it so she didn't have to. His muscles tensed as his body shook from the blows he had inflicted. He thought of his three year old son sleeping in the Tower chamber with a scar from his neck to hip because of him.
What kind of a man was he?
His concentration lapsed for a moment, but it was enough to elicit a tiny, pitiful cry from the space behind him. He broke off the spell and turned back around to see where his wife had curled, child like on the stone paving. Her hair was damp, her mouth was bleeding, and her hands were embracing her stomach almost protectively. He started to say something, but then bit the words back down. What could he say? Nothing he hadn't said that first time. Now the words were empty, hollow, accusing. Anger suddenly filled his veins and he made to kick her, before turning himself away at the last moment to shout out his frustration. She made no attempt to turn away, even to shield herself, and the man dropped to his knees brokenly.
Words failed him yet again. So he half crawled the metre to where she lay, and pulled her into his arms, trying to convey what he could no longer say. He cried as she should have done, but she remained silent. Then he healed her, caressing every mark, every bruise as it disappeared, convincing himself it would be enough. When he finished he knelt back expectantly.
Selena didn't look at him as she sat upright and then got to her feet. She was calm as she walked to the small dresser by the bed and picked up the comb to run through her hair. He couldn't bear to look at her anymore, so he did what he had done that first time, and left. He called his dragon and they flew twice about the castle before he directed it towards the King's palace. Where his power might bring him peace.
Selena kept running the comb through her hair as the servants came into the room to clean the floor. They paid her no attention at all. She stared into her reflection and wondered how she could look so perfect. She thought of her son in the Tower chamber, sleeping the night away. She thought of the son she had left behind. Then, very quickly, she allowed herself to think of the child that might have been, and allowed herself to hate her husband. She looked into the mirror and smiled her courtier smile, knowing that the ache in her heart would not last for long.
