For Idris. Thank you, for being the one I want to remember, in the year I want to forget.
It started out as a feeling
Which then grew into a hope
Which then turned into a quiet thought
Which then turned into a quiet word
She's staring at him, because he's all she ever loved. Everything she's ever wanted, it's right here, with him. And he doesn't get mad at her, like her other best friend did, as if they had thought she was choosing to leave them. He knows how hard it is to leave. He's done it. He just gives her this long, sad stare. 'We have till summer, right.' He whispers. He says it like a prayer, not a question. She wants to fall against him and cry. But she has to be the strong one. She always has to be the strong one.
And then that word grew louder and louder
'Til it was a battle cry
I'll come back
When you call me
No need to say goodbye
She's staring at him. Less than an hour ago, she was told the fate she'd seen coming for months. It was the fate that always came. 'We're moving.' Usually, it doesn't matter. Living her childhood like a stranger looking in will do that. She packed her things, said her farewells, and forgot about everyone. But he was the exception to the rule. To every rule.
Just because everything's changing
Doesn't mean it's never been this way before
All you can do is try to know who your friends are
As you head off to the war
She's staring at him. Her dad pulls away from the curb for the last time in this city. The crappy white car they got for cheap is making this horrible wheezing noise, almost enough to mask her own. She keeps him in her blurry sights until they round the corner at the end of their row of townhouses, and she thinks her goodbye. But she knows it isn't goodbye for real. It can't be for real.
Pick a star on the dark horizon
And follow the light
You'll come back when it's over
No need to say goodbye
You'll come back when it's over
No need to say goodbye
She stares at him. It's in her minds eye, of course, she hasn't seen him in person in four years. Hasn't talked to him in just as long. She's sitting on her bed, staring out at the overcast sky of this years apartment, and wishing she could just look at the stars again. To know they were looking at the same sky. The clouds part, just for a moment. The stars come through. They will always come through.
Now we're back to the beginning
It's just a feeling and no one knows yet
But just because they can't feel it too
Doesn't mean that you have to forget
She's staring at him. She's got her class picture from that year out on the table, and she's naming them all. She gets to his face, and her mom peeks over her shoulder. 'Who's that?' She asks, when she says his name. She's knows it's stupid to still be mad, to want to scream 'The boy I loved! The one you dragged me away from!' Every time he comes up from the dredges of her mind. But she's stupid. She's always stupid.
Let your memories grow stronger and stronger
'Til they're before your eyes
You'll come back
When they call you
She's not staring at him. She hasn't moved on, she'll never do that. But she can't remember his face, his voice, his smile or his even laugh anymore. She hasn't taken the class photo out recently. She doesn't want to admit, that, if given a line up, she won't be able to pick him out. But they're together. They'll always be together.
No need to say goodbye
You'll come back
When they call you
No need to say goodbye
