Sam took a deep breath and dashed from the Impala into their newest motel room, Lucky carefully bundled inside one of his hoodies. It was a soaking, freezing rain with a few angry flashes of lightning thrown in.
Sam was a little worried – he knew that some animals really freaked out during storms. How would Lucky fare?
"He alright?" Dean asked, shaking his head, droplets of water going everywhere.
"I'm not sure," Sam replied. He placed the bundle on the bed, and the black kitten tumbled out. He looked a little dazed, but otherwise he seemed fine. Sam scooped up Lucky, and cuddled him to his chest. "Lucky? You good, buddy?"
Lucky blinked his green eyes, and was about to mew up at his Human that he was fine, when the air was split by a clap of thunder. Lucky froze, all his fur puffing out. What was that HORRIBLE noise? He buried himself against Sam, yowling fearfully.
"No, no, Lucky, it's going to be okay, don't be scared," Sam cooed gently. "It's just thunder, it can't hurt you. Nothing's going to hurt you – shhhh, it's going to be fine. We're here, shhhh…" He sat on the edge of the bed slowly rocking the frightened feline in his arms, stroking his soft black fur.
Dean watched as the kitten began to calm down, his whole form relaxing thanks to Sam's tender care. "You're really good at that," he said.
"What?" Sam asked, as he continued to stroke the ebony pelt.
"Comforting him. Making his feel safe." Dean walked over and knelt down so he could pet Lucky as well. He reached under the kitten's neck, began to scritch, and was rewarded almost instantly with delighted purrs.
Sam grinned. "I guess I had a good teacher. You always made me feel safe during storms." He looked down at the kitten, this ball of fluff that had come into their lives and made a home. "You still make me feel safe, Dean," he muttered softly, knowing he was setting himself up to be mercilessly teased.
This time, however, Dean surprised him. Maybe it was because they were warm and getting dry, maybe it was the vibrations from the contented kitten, but Dean just chuckled.
"That's what I'm supposed to do, Sam. I AM the Awesome Big Brother, after all."
Sam's smile was wide and dimple-filled. "Yeah, you are. You really are, Dean."
