I Can Wait..
Squirrelflight padded towards the lake, her paws heavy. Her dark ginger fur shone in the moonlight but she took no notice.
Her tail brushed against the ferns and they rustled, but she kept on walking.
It was moonhigh, and most of ThunderClan were at the gathering, not her.
She continued on numbly, her eyes staring at nothing. She finally got to the edge of the lake at sat down, her paws being lapped by small waves.
"StarClan, if you can hear me.. tell me why.."
Her voice sounded sharp, and her tail lashed angrily as she glared up at the stars. "Why did you make me take Leafpool's kits, Yellowfang?!"
Squirrelflight's voice grew louder. The stars twinkled back coldly, and that only made the ginger Warrior's fury rise. "What did it accomplish?!" She yowled to the sky.
"What did any of it do for anyone?!"
She got to her paws, tail lashing angrily. "All we did was lie! And for what? You've ripped apart families!"
Squirrelflight collapsed to the ground, her strength spent. Her claws ripped at the grass below them, and the lake remained silent.
Numbness spread through her, and she forced her eyes shut. "My father and mother are disappointed in me.." Her voice was no longer sharp, but cold and unfeeling.
"My sister and I are both shunned..." She continued on, her tail wishing from side to side. "The kits I raised ignore me, and one of them is gone.." Her shoulders started to shake, along with her voice.
"And Brambleclaw won't even glance at me.." Those words were the hardest to say. A small breeze whistled across her fur, and she shivered slightly. Then, a strange feeling overtook her, something was compelling her to glance up. And so she did, and what she was amazing.
The lake was... glowing, for lack of better words. It's surface glimmered and shone and as the ginger Warrior rose to get closer, a blast of pure light nearly blinded her. As soon as she felt it was safe to open her eyes again, she was utterly shocked at what she saw.
Two StarClan cats were walking across the lake. One was massive, a tabby. And the other was leaner, smaller. They padded along, tails twined side by side, their glowing white pawprints twisting into one track. A memory tugged at Squirrelflight, and she suddenly knew who these cats were.
Sending a quick prayer of thanks to StarClan, she turned away and started padding back to camp, her worries calmed.
'Brambleclaw and I are still meant to be. It may take a while, and I deserve that. But I can wait.'
That was Squirrelflight's last thought as her bushy tail disappeared into the trees. 'I have patience. I can wait..'
