Here she comes... He thought as a pink bob of hair came into sight. She visited him every day at noon, always at a run. She didn't have time to walk, she claimed, the days seemed only 24 minutes long.
"Hey Wizard!" She gasped, doubled over at the door. Immediately, she presented a cup of coffee to him. She'd been doing so ever since he had admitted to staying up late watching the stars. It was magic she claimed, it could keep her up a whole day for work.
It wasn't magic, he could only taste coffee grounds, but delivered by her every day with that smile, well, maybe it was.
"What does Chase want today?"
Ah, yes. Fortunes.
"...a shining cherry."
Her face lit up.
"Perfect! I just harvested some this morning!"
It had started with the purple bell, she'd wanted to become everyone's friend as fast as possible, and, as petty as it was, the way to the villagers' hearts was through gifts.
He, himself, was petty like that.
Speaking to and giving gifts to everyone had earned many people's trust, but eventually, one had stuck out from the rest, as he knew it would.
He could read hearts, and he saw the young man's change from wanting items to wanting a person.
And hers had changed too.
All it had taken was that one question, that one off-hand answer to start this mess.
"Wizard, what do you want?"
"The stars."
"Something I can actually give you!"
"Something to keep me awake."
And so, coffee.
"Hey, Wizard, don't you ever want anything else?"
I want you. I want your smile, I want to look and look at you all the time because you are the only star in my world and I promise that I will never ever want anything material again because you are my heart's greatest desire.
"The stars."
"You know I can't give you that."
I know.
"A coffee will do then."
With a bright smile, she ran off, with a brighter twinkle from the ring on her finger.
