DEAN'S LAST DAY

Dean Winchester was out of time. He sat in the cemetery, leaning against an old oak tree. The wind was blowing gently through the warm, summer air, stirring up a refreshing breeze. Soon he would be buried here, beneath the sweeping branches of the tree. He swept his fingers through his short, spiky hair and sighed. It was almost the end, now. The sun shone hot on his cheek and he smiled at the warmth, wondered what it would be like to sleep in the cold soil for forever. The people who knew couldn't tell him. Slowly, he traced the letters carved into the gravestones before him.

MARY WINCHESTER

BELOVED MOTHER, BELOVED WIFE.

JOHN WINCHESTER

REST IN PEACE

YOU LIVE ON IN YOUR BOYS.

Gently, Dean traced the letters on the third headstone. A tear trickled down his cheek.

IN LOVING MEMORY OF

SAMMY WINCHESTER

I WILL NOT FORGET YOU.

It had been sixty years since Sam had been stabbed to death in that decrepit ghost town. He had died in Dean's arms. Dean could still feel Sam's curls as he ran his fingers through them, could still see Sam studying his law books or sleeping against the passenger side window in the Impala. Sixty years, today, Dean thought. Now finally, he would get to see his brother – the Winchester boys, together once more. They would all be family again.

As Dean sat in the cemetery the sun set over the distant hills. The sky turned first orange, then pink and purple, until at last the twilight gave way to night. Dean didn't notice. He had run out of time, finally. He was with Sammy again, and that was all he had ever wanted.
