Author's Note: Holy moly…I HAD to rewrite this. It was so horrendously OOC and terribly written back in the day. Oh the horror! I hope it will be more comfortable to the eyes now.
Apparently I came up with the story while folding 100 paper stars for a friend back in the day. Well, here we are.
Warnings: BL, no sex scene, but it is implicated.
Disclaimer: I do not own ANY of the characters from Kingdom Hearts or the game itself.
Hundred Paper Stars
The Sunset District of Twilight Town was still drenched from the rain that fell from the thick clouds. The evening sunrays refracted through the tiny droplets clinging to the edges of store signs.
Sora ran through the shallow pools of water on the clean cement. He fled past the people, running up the small flight of stairs to his home. Quickly, he opened his mailbox, breathing heavily. His hand grasped an envelope with blue inked letters written on it.
"Ah, it's from Riku!" He shouted excitedly, racing into his home.
Roxas sat on his bed opposite of Sora's. His freshwater blue eyes scanned the tops of every building. He rested the side of his head onto the glass, admiring the sunset and occasionally turning himself around to eye the closed door. Both he and the other boy have been living together for quite a while after Riku moved out of town. Both boys figured that it would be simpler to share a place; it saved on many other expenses anyway.
Roxas blinked out of his thoughts as the main door opened and slammed shut downstairs. He sighed at the deafening stomps that came nearer and nearer. Finally, the source burst into the room, ecstatically laughing and pouncing at him.
"Augh! Sora!" He yelled in an irritated tone," What's the matter with you?"
"I finally got a letter back from Riku!" Sora replied, almost flinging the envelope at him.
"That's nice. Is he coming back to Twilight Town?"
"Well, let's see," The brunet opened the letter, pulling out a few pages of yellow parchment.
He began scanning each row of words; Roxas watched his facial expression. He made it a habit to notice every movement of his features, and eventually, he learned to know what each meant. It became sympathetically obvious when Sora was happy, sad or even neutral. He could just tell, like when he swore that he saw Sora's lips begin to frown for a second when he read the last page of the letter. But a moment after, his lips bounced back into his usual smile, albeit awkwardly.
"Any…" Roxas paused, eyes darting to the side to think of the right words to ask. "Any news from him?"
"Nothing really new," Sora answered with a shrug. He casually tossed the papers onto the oak desk before making his way out of the room.
"Mind if I read it?" Roxas called out to him.
The brunet shrugged again. "Be my guest," He replied.
Roxas jumped off his bed and approached the desk. He leaned against the edge, unfolding the letter. After a few seconds of skimming through the words, he raised a brow and sighed, eyeing the doorway where Sora left through.
That night, Roxas sat at the oak desk in their bedroom. The swirling carousel lamp lit his working space with quiet yellow and blue lights. Both boys opted to have a carousel lamp as a desk light – not too bright, not too dim; bright enough to accompany either of them on sleepless nights; dim enough for the other to continue to sleep soundly. And he hoped that Sora was sleeping soundly while he worked.
Roxas grasped a strip of yellow paper every few seconds, folding and folding until he ended up with small, paper pentagons. Using his nails, he pressed down on each edge, inflating the pentagons to form three-dimensional paper stars.
"Ninety-nine," He counted in a whisper, reaching out for the glass bottle containing the rest of the ninety-eight stars.
Sora quietly stirred in his sleep, rolling to his side under the sheets of his bed. Roxas turned his head slightly back to assure the other boy was in deep slumber.
"At the rate that he keeps randomly mumbling in his sleep, I'm not going to finish this," The blond boy whispered, stretching out his hand for another strip of paper.
"Whatcha doing this late at night?"
Roxas jumped in his seat, spinning around.
"S-Sora!" He stammered, heart threatening to float out of his body as Sora's heated breath lingered on his ear.
"Oh, hey! Paper stars!" The lively boy interrupted, eyes shimmering at the stars in the glass bottle on the desk. "How many do you have?" He asked.
Roxas breathed an annoyed sigh through his nose. "How do you wake up so suddenly with no hint of grogginess?"
"Don't change the subject," Sora pouted. "How many stars did you fold?"
The blond boy grumbled; he plugged the cork to the opening of the glass bottle and walked towards his bed, completely ignoring the other teen.
"It's none of your business…I'm going to sleep," He retorted in an irritated tone.
"Are you angry? How come you're angry?"
There was no reply.
Roxas slid onto the mattress, throwing the covers over his head. Sora hopped to the side of the blond's bed and began nudging his shoulder with his forefinger. Roxas released an annoyed groan, shoving the brunet's hand away with his shoulder and squishing his eyes shut.
"Don't be mad, Roxas!" Sora tugged at his friend's arm, "I'm sorry…for whatever I did that made you mad."
Both remained silent and still for a moment. Roxas wriggled out of the blankets with a sigh, staring at the floor rather than the pleading pout the other boy gave him.
"Why is it impossible to stay annoyed at you?" He grumbled.
Sora chuckled, swiping his thumb across his nose proudly. Roxas jumped off the bed, groping around the floor for his slippers. He walked over to the desk, turning to his side to reach a hand out towards Sora.
"Come here," Roxas beckoned.
The brunet walked past his arm, cheerfully closing in the distance between their faces.
"Not that close!" Roxas gently pushed the other's lips away with his fingertips.
"You have girly hands," Sora teased with a chuckle.
"Can it."
"Sorry," The brunet snickered.
Roxas grabbed the bottle and held it up to show the other's curious eyes. "I'm folding a hundred stars…to get a wish," He explained. "And I was about to finish." He held up the last strip of yellow paper.
"Woah!" Sora looked impressed for a moment. "You're really bored, aren't you?" He genuinely wondered.
"No," Roxas turned around, setting the bottle on the desk, "I'm kinda doing this for you… or for me. I don't know," He pondered out loud.
"What do you mean?" Sora folded his arms behind his head.
Then, it finally dawned on him. He realized the letter from Riku was nowhere to be found. The yellow parchment disappeared…or rather, was cut and made into paper stars. Roxas looked away when he saw the brunet's wide eyes of realization. He winced a little in preparation for a reprimanding from Sora – he did shred Riku's letter after all.
"You actually took your time to cut the paper into strips and fold them? That must've taken forever," He commented in innocent amazement.
Roxas looked back at the other boy, somewhat relieved. "I uh…yeah?"
Sora chuckled, "I'm not mad." He gave a pat the other's shoulder blade, "It's a bad memory to leave around anyway." He shrugged. "Well, I see you're on the hundredth star. Drop it in."
Roxas smiled slightly, then began to fold the final star. The brunet watched his flatmate in concentration. Within seconds, the five-pointed star was completed. Roxas dropped it into the glass bottle, immediately sealing the opening with the cork and closing his eyes.
Sora began to ask, "What's your-?"
"To be the person always there…every time you need me to be," He interrupted him, eyes still squished shut.
Sora watched the other boy, quietly processing his words. Roxas kept his face turned away, somewhat hoping that the brunet did not catch the meaning of his ambiguous words. Regardless of Sora's usual cluelessness, this time it seemed he understood the underlying message. He pulled the blond boy close until their stomachs touched. Roxas quickly held his arms up, stopping the brunet right when the tips of their noses touched.
"W-what're you doing?" He stuttered.
"Thanks, Roxas," Sora's heated whisper traveled to his lips.
Roxas trembled, almost falling to the floor, but Sora wrapped his arms around him. His hand began to caress the bottom of Roxas' spine, acquiring a sigh from him. Sora bit down on the pendant that connected to the zipper of Roxas' sleeveless shirt, pulling him closer. He moved to trail kisses up his neck until their lips met.
Roxas shifted his arms from between him and Sora to around his neck. His mind was blank in passion and confusion; regardless, he followed through the other boy's actions. Sora pushed his body against his, forcing him to walk backwards. When he found the blond boy centimeters from the edge of the bed, he released his embrace, letting Roxas fall onto the sheets.
"Hey! What was that-" Roxas began to complain, but paused when Sora hovered over him.
Sora walked his legs closer until they were between Roxas' thighs. He lowered himself to trace Roxas' jawbone with his tongue.
"Sora…" He moaned softly in embarrassment.
"Shhh," Sora whispered onto his lips, climbing onto the bed and straddling his waist.
The blue carousel lamp radiated its light throughout the room, making Sora and Roxas' skin appear a soft azure. They watched each other for a moment with half-lidded eyes, observing one another's crystal orbs – their colours brought out even more by the light of the lamp. They both wondered why they did not see how alluring each other' traits were. Moments passed by until Roxas' arms pulled Sora's hips in, locking them into place. Sora removed his short-sleeved jacket, allowing it to slide onto the ground. He placed a hand on Roxas' chest and began to unzip the sleeveless, black shirt. The blond boy arched his chest upwards, following Sora's touch.
Sora leaned over to Roxas' ear; his whispers and breath were enough to send an earthquake down the blond boy's spine. He linked their fingers together, his legs crossed under Roxas' legs, binding them together.
The blond boy rolled Sora onto his back, mounting onto his waist and showing a starving expression on his face.
"Huh? Why am I on top of Sora?" He wondered to himself as he was driven into a state of delirium – all inhibitions lost; he was confused, but allowed himself to naturally move with Sora. He brushed his thumb on the other boy's cheek and gave a serene smile. "Sora, for the longest time, I've-"
Roxas blanked out for the rest of the night after Sora pulled him down by the collar of his shirt for a passionate kiss.
Daybreak came in what seemed like ages. Roxas faced Sora's back, his nose was buried into the nape of his neck. The bed sheets were ruffled, one of the corners fell to the floor, and the rest wrapped around the two boys. Garments were scattered everywhere. Roxas blinked himself awake, finding his skin bare; he pulled the covers closer to his body. Sora kept sleeping regardless of how much he was moving.
It felt surreal; Roxas placed a hand over his temple, trying to recount the previous night's events. When he realized that it was all real, a dash of red ran across his face and his lips curved into a goofy smile. But he cleared his throat, forcing himself to wear his poker face once again to compliment his composure. He turned to his side, finally deciding to wake his lover.
"Lover…" He snickered at the word as another rush of happiness swept through him. He nudged Sora's shoulder affectionately, but the other boy only let out a snore. So he slid down onto the bedsheets, leveling himself with the back of the brunet's head. He licked the nape of his neck before blowing air onto it, causing Sora to jump and fall out of bed.
"Ah-ow!" He rubbed his back and pulled the sheets to his body as he remembered he was unclothed, "R-Roxas! What was that for?!" He began to blush and pulled himself back into bed.
Roxas chuckled, "It was tempting."
Sora let out a nervous laugh. "I didn't know you had this kinda side to you," He said as he scooted closer to the blond boy.
"Well, I didn't know you had this side to you either," Roxas retorted and made the both of them turn a bashful red. He sat up slightly, leaving the bedsheets covering everything below the waist. "Say…" He began hesitantly, "Judging by how the letter was written, were you and Riku…?"
"Nope," Sora answered quickly, leaving the other boy confused with his answer. So he elaborated. "He's my BESTEST friend ever. It's just that, in the end, we still had to go our separate ways." He released a wistful sigh. "You could say he didn't live up to his promise. That's why I was kinda down." He gave a grin of assurance then opened one eye, turning his attention to the bottle of stars that stood on the desk. "They really look like paopu fruits," He commented on the yellow stars.
"They are paopu fruits," Roxas said. "And well…I live up to my promises, so…"
Sora chuckled. "And your wish came true, I guess?"
They both remained silent for minutes, watching the hundred stars sealed in the bottle. Sora wrapped an arm around Roxas, resting his chin on the blond boy's forehead.
"Hey," He said.
"Yeah?" Roxas replied quietly, snuggling close to him.
"Thanks for shaping an unhappy memory…into something so heart-warming."
Roxas blinked, burying is nose deeper into the crevice of Sora's collar. He did not have to share a real paopu fruit with Sora after all. A hundred paper stars sealed in a glass bottle were enough to tie them together for a new beginning – and for who knows long?
Author's note: That was bad. Hahaha! I was editing the original while reading it, and I felt like pressing Ctrl+A then Delete. But I strove through to finish rewriting it since quite a sum of readers enjoyed the story. I'll be honest, I ship more Riku x Sora nowadays, but Sora x Roxas is still on my list. I really hope I cleaned the writing up so that it flows more. I also hope you enjoyed the story overall!
There is a legend similar to the thousand paper cranes (the bird); if you fold a hundred paper stars, you get a wish. As for the paper cranes, if you fold a THOUSAND, you get a wish. It's a Japanese tradition, but people can fold them for fun and gifts.
