Chapter One
It's a beautiful spring Sunday afternoon. The sun is shining, the birds are chirping happily, and there's not a cloud in the sky. You're currently sitting at a table outside your favorite café, in the never boring New York City, drinking a medium iced coffee with caramel drizzle and reading The Triumph of Evil by Paul Kavanagh. You're wearing a nice mint green ruffled blouse, jean skirt, and mid-calf brown boots. Your hair's tied up in a loose bun. (If you have short hair then it's styled like you normally would have it.) Since Sunday is your day off, you decided to have a me day. Usually you go out with your friends Becky and Amanda, but they're spending time with their boyfriends. Honestly, you find it as a nice change of pace. They're always trying to set you up with Ian, who's a Geometry teacher at Crotona Academy High School. It's not that you don't like Ian, he's funny, sweet, caring, and levelheaded, but he's just not the one for you. His mind's already made up for the next 20 years at least, but you don't even know what pair of shoes you're wearing tomorrow.
You sigh as you think about this and take another sip of your iced coffee. "You live by the moment (Name) don't forget that. Besides, you want to look like a stable professional woman of today." You say to cheer yourself up, but it doesn't work.
"Who am I kidding? It makes me sound even more pathetic," you say.
You decide to redirect that negative thinking into your reading and just enjoy your day. That is until a shout catches your attention.
"Hey (Name)! What are you up too?!"
You look up and it's none other than Amanda walking up with her boyfriend Jason. You smile and wave, mentally grimacing because you're not looking forward to being a third wheel. You hope that she doesn't ask you to accompany them.
"Hey Amanda! Hey Jason! I'm just sitting here reading a book and drinking an iced coffee. What about you guys?" You point each out as you mention it.
"Jason and I just ate lunch and are going to see a movie. We're going to go see Lake House." She kisses Jason's cheek. "You want to come?"
You shake your head. "No thank you. I was going to the library after I was done here. I'm almost done with my book. Besides I don't want to see that." The last part is a lie; you did want to see that movie.
However, Amanda caught it. "You're such a bad liar (Name). I'd believe you, but you've mentioned quite a few times that you want to see it. Also you're playing with your hair; you only do that when you lie."
You notice you're playing with a loose strand and drop your hand.
"What's your real reason for not joining us?"
You sigh. "You two are on a date. I don't want to ruin."
Amanda giggles. "You couldn't ruin it even if you tried, but if that's how you feel. We'll see you around (Name)." They left and you breathed a sigh of relief.
"Well that could have gotten ugly." You run a hand along your hair and continue your book and drinking your iced coffee. You notice how much is left of your book.
"Huh, guess I am almost done with my book." You grin. "Looks like I'm going to the library when I'm done here." You keep your grin as you continue to read.
