{A/N: Ahhh! I can't believe I'm posting this! This is my first attempt at fanfic, so if you hate it, don't flame me.
BTW, this is my first time posting at fanfic.net, so if it looks really screwed up, I'm sorry!}
What would've happened if Warren hadn't showed up at the end of "Mixed Signals"?
"The kiss that made a man move back home and buy a bowling alley..."
They stood there, lips inches apart, staring at each other, wondering who was going to make the next move.
Finally, after what seemed like an eternity, Ed moved in closer, and they kissed. It was sweet, but full of passion, and he was thrilled hen she kissed him back. All of a sudden, Carol pulled back and sat on the bench. She put her head in her hands, elbows on her knees, and laughed.
*Laughing? Why is she laughing? This was supposed to be a passionate moment!* Ed thought, confused. What had he screwed up? He walked over to the bench, wondering what he was going to do next. He sat down next to her. "Why are you laughing?"
Carol looked up at him and smiled. "Nobody screwed this up." she said.
"What, were you expecting space monkeys to come down and invade the planet the second we were about to kiss?" Ed asked, still confounded.
"No. I just had this, you know, feeling that something was going to come and ruin this moment. It just seemed like something was going to keep us apart. Like Bonnie Hane."
"What does Bonnie Hane have to do with keeping us apart?"
Carol sighed. "Everything. You know that night at the resturant with the soapbox? Well, I kind of developed this giddy little crush on you. Well, first she made you work overtime trying to beat her. Then you started dating, and then you, er, slept together. I thought I was losing you."
"And it took us so long to get back to this point that you thought it was over for us," Ed supplied, "and that this would never happen."
Carol smiled. "I think you got it."
Ed thought about it for a second. "Well, now back to the first question. Why were you laughing?"
Carol started laughing again. "Relief, I guess. It just seemed like the most appropriate reaction."
Ed put his arm around her and pulled her head to rest on his shoulder. They sat there for a few minutes, looking up at the night sky, the stars glowing overhead.
Ed looked at his watch. "We better get back," he suggested.
"Yeah, people are going to start wondering where we are. And I want a beer."
They walked back to Stuckeybowl, hand in hand, staying silent most of the way.
Right before they reached the parking lot Carol stopped. She took both of Ed's hands in hers, and looked up at him. "Thanks," she said quietly.
He grinned. "For what?"
"This." She reached up and kissed him. "And for being a great friend, and for letting neither one of us screw up."
They started across the parking lot. As they walked inside, Ed kissed her back. "You're welcome."
"Now how about that beer?"
*Hope you liked!*
