Prompt: apples

There were times when Adam just wanted the floor to swallow him whole.

He felt the way almost every day of high school, any of the few dates he had with Kendall, and certainly this moment in which he'd replied to Detective Angell's possible flirting with, "An apple a day keeps the doctor away."

That had been what he said when she'd rubbed an apple along his shirt and told him it probably helped him keep all those muscles of his.

Damn, damn, double damn, he was a moron.

He expected her to start laughing at him, call him dork or a loser like Kendall, and stomp out.

Instead, she reached out and ruffled his hair, "You're cute, you know that."

"No, I, uh, wasn't really aware of that."

Seriously, if the ground could just open.

"Well," she said, leaning close, close enough that he could smell her perfume, and feel the heat of her skin, "You are. Very, very cute."

"I, uh," he looked at her for a moment, trying to sound as cool as he could, "think you're cute too. I mean, not like a teddy bear cute, but hot, but not…no, I mean not like you're an object hot…just normal level hot."

Jess grinned, "Not super level?"

"Well, of course you're," he stopped, grinned a little, "You're playing with me."

She nodded, "I figure if I play enough you'll ask me to dinner to shut me up?"

Adam smiled, "Would you like to go to dinner with me tonight, Jessica?"

Jess smiled even wider at his formal question, "I'd love to."

Adam nodded, "Good, that's really good."

Jess took a bite from her apple, before handing it to him, "Eat up then, Ross, you'll need the strength."

Adam squeezed the apple tight as he watched Jessica walk away. He was definitely going to need his strength with that one.
