Mattimeo Fanfic

Chapter #1

It was a bright, sunny day; cool, but warm enough that you didn't need a cloak. It has been three years since the Fall Of the Warrior's Return. Cornflower and Matthias were walking atop the ramparts, chatting about the upcoming feast and gazing out over peaceful Mossflower. They were just above the main gate, when Matthias saw a small frail figure stumble out of the woods, and drag herself to the door, hugging a small bundle tightly to her chest. She cried out, "Help! Save us! Refuge! Please!" before collapsing at the doorstep, still clinging tightly to the bundle.

Cornflower ran to get the Abbot, and Matthias bounded down the stairs with amazing speed and agility for someone his size. He ran to the Gate door, and began to open it when Constance, a large female badger, saw him. She has heard Cornflower tell the Abbot about the stranger, and ran to help Mathias.  She jerked the door open fully just as Matthias squeezed out to help the beggar. He ran to the unconscious figure's side and gently lifted the thin stranger, with amazing strength for a mouse. The senseless mouse still clung tightly to the bundle. Constance took one last look around before helping Matthias to carry the stranger to the Infirmary.

Comfort slowly came to consciousness. Her senses swam and her vision slid in and out of focus. Her body shook with fever. As her vision cleared slightly, she began to take in her surroundings. She seemed to be in a large room, full of beds. She turned her head and came face to face with four mice and a large badger, all of whom were anxiously staring at her. She tried to turn away from them, but felt too weak and restrained to move. One of the mice, a young, kindly looking lady mouse moved towards her and began to stroke her head soothingly.

"Don't try to move. You're hurt, and burning with fever." Cornflower said. Comfort felt her body relax as the cool paw passed over her burning forehead.

"Where am I?" Comfort asked weakly.

"You're in Redwall Abby, dear. I'm Cornflower." She began to point out the others. "That's Father Abbot Mordalfus, that's Sister May the infirmary sister, this is Constance, and here's my husband, Matthias the Warrior. And what's your name?"

"My name is Comfort. Where's my baby?" she replied, anxiety filling her voice as she glanced around the room worriedly.

" What baby? The only thing you had with you was a bundle," said Cornflower.

Comfort spoke anxiously "That bundle has the baby I'm taking care of. We're the only survivors from our village."  She drifted off into senselessness at those last words.

Constance began unwrapping the bundle that had been placed in the locker beside the bed. It began to move and whine. She removed the last layer of tattered fabric, and inside, there was a tiny bay field mouse, wrapped in a shawl. Sister May rushed over and picked up the infant, who was just beginning to awake.

" She's so small. How could she have survived such a long journey?" asked Matthias.

" Comfort must have taken better care of the infant than herself. Cornflower, will you please take care of the infant till further notice? Matthias, would you go out onto the Abbey grounds and find several straight sticks and smooth them down? On you way, please tell who ever is on cooking duty today to make up some broth? Sister May, please bring over that water pitcher and help me to start cleaning some of these wounds. Some of them look rather bad." As the Abbot gave out orders, the creatures set about doing them. Constance stayed behind to aide the Abbot and Sister May as they set about tending Comfort.
