A mother's love
The two-year-old toddler snuggled into her mother's arms. "Bye Sweetie." The loving mother explained, "I'll be home for supper. I promise." The baby just looked at her mommy and daddy hug and kiss before deciding to go play in her room, but not before toddling over to her mom and saying, "I love you mommy." To her.
The little baby looked around, wondering where on Earth that ringing noise was coming from. Then she heard it, her father was actually crying as he talked on the phone. "Daddy!" the baby called out, only to be drowned out by grieving sobs and sad sniffles. "DADDY!" the toddler cried out again, this time hearing her father's footsteps head towards his only daughter's bedroom. He had a tear stained face and red eyes and an even redder nose. "Daddy, what happen?" the little girl asked curiously. He looked at his daughter, with a smile just like her mother's, hair the same color as a brown leave in autumn and freckles dotting her chubby little cheeks, she definitely was his rare gem.
"Patricia," he began, "Mommy, she…" the baby looked up at her daddy as he continued, "She died in a car crash on her way to work." He explained after wiping away a tear that slid down one of his light green eyes. "Mommy come back for supper?" the baby asked innocently. He just shook his head, making a 'no' sign, causing the little girl to squeeze her daddy's leg, crying herself. "I'll miss her too." Mr. Reichardt explained, picking Patricia up, "But we have to stay strong. We only have each other, along with our other relatives and friends." He explained. Patricia smiled as she exclaimed, "I CAN stay strong." Her father chuckled at his daughter's optimistic attitude in such a pessimistic situation. "Stay strong for me, my little Peppermint, for I will give you your mother's love." He replied, smiling at his happy daughter. "I promise." He explained as he gently placed his daughter-his rare gem-back down on the floor.
As he walked away, he looked back at Patricia and smiled, "I promise." He repeated.
