'What were you thinking Jess?'

'Excuse me?' Angell turned from her chair and looked up at the detective towering over her. She was sat doing work, alone in the empty precinct. It was the early hours of the morning, no one around. She'd just come back and thought she could get some work done.

'I just heard from Mac that Stella has roped you into the Diakos case? Who, the hell, do you think you are?'

Jess stared at him, 'I think I'm the detective that is actually doing something about it! Better than you – sitting back and watching. Waiting for him to get caught.'

'Jess, you could get killed doing this.'

She scoffed at his remark, 'I could get killed everyday or any day. This job brings risks. You know that!'

'Yeah, well this risk I'm not letting you take. I am asking you to back down.'

'Hell no. Stella's my friend she needs me on this.'

'If Stella wants to go against this guy let her but it's got nothing to do with you.'

'If something happens to Stella then at least I know I tried to help her. Okay?'

He gave her a cold, glare. His piercing blues eyes penetrating her. She tried not to turn away, hold her ground. For once she believed she was making the right choice, doing the right thing.

'But then if something happens to you? What happens if he comes after you next Jess?'

'I can take care of my self.'

She watched him, watched him swallow her words. She didn't want to be harsh on him, granted she didn't want him to change her mind because she believed this was what was meant to happen. She didn't need Stella to beg her for help, she knew how much she wanted to get this guy – plus she owed Stella a lot for everything she's done.

'If something happens Jess you're answering,' turning he headed straight for the door. She stood, watching him leave until he stopped, gripped tightly against the door frame and turned to look at her, sorrow written in his eyes.

'I didn't want this to be how it ended.'

And then he left, walked out, and she stood there, for the one moment in her life hating her self for what she'd said. Maybe this was the wrong choice. Maybe they should leave it to the feds.

But then maybe, he just took this as an opportunity to end their relationship.
