"Damn... Get up." His body refused to move. He shook his head. Was he really this weak? "Get up!"

"There is no –"

"Get up! I said get up! Move!" Again he tried to stand to be announced the winner, but again he failed.

The examiner paused to watch the black-haired genin. He shook his head. Couldn't the kid see that his body was completely worn out? Besides, it wasn't like it would be the end of the world not to make it this time through. There would be plenty of chuunin exams, including one later on that same year.

"Sasuke, stop. You can't do anything more in this state," murmured Kakashi, appearing next to the boy.

Sasuke glared up at his sensei, as if somehow the man had been the cause of his body's failure. Then, slowly realizing that that was it – it was over and he had lost the battle with himself – he sagged and allowed the examiner to pronounce his doom.

"There is no winner. Both genin fail."

Had he heard these words, the youngest Uchiha living might have begun his fight once more, hearing the sound of a heavy gate clanging open to release evil into Konoha. He did not, however, because he was unconscious. Still, it would have been better had he not been so. Had he been awake to kick the medic-nins away, perhaps everything might still have been saved, because then at least Kakashi could have gotten a chance to help him. Fate would not allow this though, and Sasuke was carried away as Kakashi stood, confused. Something was wrong. Sasuke was meant to stand up.

AN: The prologue is short, I know, but I don't believe in pushing past where my brain tells me to stop, and my brain says that there is no other place to stop this. In any case, this story will be written as I feel like it, so basically if you want updates sooner, you'll have to put some pressure on me. nervous laugh Most of the time it's not that I can't write or don't want to write – it's just that I'm such a procrastinator I never do write until I have an angry mob after me. sweatdrop In any case, This takes place just after Sasuke's fight in the prelims. It may not seem like it, but just Sasuke not standing up changes a lot of things. grin If you've read Set it Right, I guess you know that I'm a bit obsessive with these "what if" fics. I've got another one started on what if Iruka's parents hadn't died. sigh Ah well, my Author's Note is getting longer than my story so I guess I should quite and just see what the consensus is.
