Amy hurried into the car watching the tree branches flow with the wind. She had gotten the call just yesterday, she was going to see Spartan again! She missed him terribly but she wondered how she would handle it, seeing the horse that she and her mother, Marion tried to rescue in their tragic accident. Amy pushed that thought away as she climbed into Ty's pickup.
"Are you ready?" Ty asked
"Yeah I think so" Amy replied as Ty started the engine. It felt like forever until Ty broke the silence.
"Are you excited to see Spartan again?"
"I'm not sure, I really want to see him but, I feel like I shouldn't be there because he really doesn't belong to me anymore."
"But did he ever belong to you?"
"Well to me he was mine. It was hard enough to let him go, how am I going to face him again."
"I guess this is your chance" Ty said as he drove up a brick driveway. Amy looked around the yard was beautiful! There was a front stable block and to the right of that was a training ring, to the left was a giant pasture with some horses grazing in it. There was a man in the front of the stable. He waved and came over to them.
"I'm sure you remember me!" He said shaking both Ty and Amy's hand.
"Hello Larry" Amy replied.
"My grand-daughter Hannah is gone today but I will go and take you to see Gerry!" Larry said. They came to a stall and "name of owner" called to Spartan in the back of his stall. He came up, and Amy remembered everything about him, his noble face but the look of sweetness in his eyes.
"Hello Spartan, I mean Gerry" Amy corrected herself.
"Gerry has been doing very well at all of the competitions he's been at! He's a fantastic jumper! Would you like to ride him?" Asked Larry
"Of course I would, if that is ok?" Asked Amy
"I did offer didn't I?" Joked Larry, hurrying to the tack room and pulling out a saddle and bridle.
"I do warn you, he has been a bit temperamental, well at least that is what Hannah tells me, She's the one who mostly rides Gerry." Larry said.
"Well I'm sure she knows him very well after working with him for all these years." Said Amy as she stroked Spartan's muzzle. In no time Spartan was tacked up and ready to go. Amy led him down to the training ring and mounted. Amy signaled him to walk a stretched him out. Then she took Spartan through his paces. He was incredibly smooth and all the thoughts of riding Spartan came back into her head. After a few circuits Amy asked,
"Can I try him over some jumps?"
"Yes of course!' Larry said. Amy turned Spartan toward the jumps and pushed him into a canter. But something just didn't feel right, when they were about 10 feet away from the jump Spartan tensed up and his muscles were all stiff. Although he willingly cleared the jump Amy sensed something strange. Amy turned him toward the next jump, and Spartan showed the same routine. Although he looked like he was jumping perfectly fine, something wasn't right. Amy finished the course and rode over to Mr. Boswell and Ty.
"Great ride!" Larry commented stroking Spartan's nose.
"Yes but, Mr. Boswell did something ever happened that might have spooked or upset Gerry while jumping?" Amy asked. Mr. Boswell sighed.
"I think I should tell you the truth."
"Truth? What truth?" Amy asked eager to know.
"My grand-daughter had an accident on Gerry a week ago and now she won't ride him again, she's not hurt but I don't know about Gerry."
To be continued…
