"Momma!" My shouts went un heralded as my mother shoved me into the ranks of the younger children and begged one of the women to disguise me. The older looking simply nodded and took me into a back room where she stripped me of my clothes and dressed me in the clothes of her children, then she smeared dirt over my face. Outside I heard on of the strange men with the symbols on his head yell, then my mommy screamed. The lady tried to stop me but I saw it, the man hit mommy.

Mommy tried to get up, and then the scary man came by and his eyes were glowing. He told my mommy to tell me where she hid me. I wanted to run out and say "Here I am! Please don't hurt mommy." But the lady wouldn't let me. When I looked out the window again he looked angry and told here he would hand her to his guards or something worse if she didn't. Mommy spat at him.

Then the man got really angry and he made a nasty face and put his hand over mommy's head. She started shaking then, and she wouldn't stop, and the man was smiling like he was happy. The lady held me while I cried.

I woke with a start, panic gripping my heart as I watched the ceiling, the memories of my mother's death pouring into my mind. Every action she took that day was deliberate, she saved me and sacrificed herself. I may never know why, but she gave me a chance that has spread out and given others opportunities that normally would not have been. She in her act of motherly love saved so many souls, I knew exactly where she was. And for the first time I asked the god of man a favor. I asked him to tell my mother I missed her.
