what I never thought I'd have

"Rise and shine, beautiful."

Remus stirred. Blinking awake to find himself in an empty bed, sunlight streaming in through the open blinds. Rabastan's voice had come from behind him. He rolled from one side to the other to see his husband stood shirtless in the doorway. Remus' eyes ran across Rab's body and then his eyes widened at the cup of tea in his hands. It was in Remus' favourite yellow mug.

"You brought me tea," Remus smiled.

Rabastan came and set the mug down, running his hand through Remus' hair. "Of course I did; how are you feeling this morning?"

"I'd feel better if you were getting back into bed to cuddle me," Remus responded softly.

Rabastan smiled running his hand down Remus' arm before resting it on his protruding belly. Remus couldn't help but notice the look of pride on Rab's face. Soon they would be a family — something that Remus thought he would never have. He had Rab, and soon, they'd have Bump.

"You know I have to go to work, Remy," Rabastan said. "I have to wait for that sociopath, Fudge, to come to my office. He'll go 'I have this amazing idea' that will be a crock of shit. I will look at him and go 'You lower the IQ of the whole street.' Not just the Ministry, but all the Muggle buildings above."

"Such optimism," Remus sighed as Rab drew circles with his thumb on the stretched skin of Remus' belly.

"But then, when the day is over, I get to come home to you," Rabastan said, kissing Remus' forehead, "and he gets to go home alone wearing a silk scarf he thinks looks distinguishing — it doesn't."

Rab softly touched his lips to Remus' and then stood up to get changed. Remus watched him, debating how to busy himself today. Perhaps today was the day he'd start painting the nursery, or maybe he would invite Lily round for tea, as she too, was heavily pregnant. As if he read Remus' mind, Rabastan chose that moment to ask his plans for the day. Remus did his thinking aloud, watching his husband dress for work. He looked so handsome, so powerful. Remus found himself smiling — content.

"Don't you overdo yourself today," Rab warned, dragging Remus from his hazy daydreams of their future.

"Cross my heart," Remus said.

"You'll Floo if you need me?"

"I promise."

Rabastan studied him carefully, knowing that Remus was the type to overdo it in most scenarios, before collecting his things — namely his wand and some galleons — from his bedside table. Then Rab came back to Remus and kissed him again, slowly. "I love you, Remus Lupin."

"I love you too, Rab," Remus whispered.

Remus listened to him call goodbye and then the sound of the Floo rushing in the fireplace. He threw back the covers and swung his feet out of bed.

Time to start the day.
