Together Forever

Disclaimer: I don't own the Greek Myths.

Looking down at the mortal before him, Hades reflected on the song that Orpheus had played to him and his beloved Persephone. All around him everyone wept softly from the beautiful song. Even Cerberus could be heard whining softly in the background. Truly Orpheus must have loved his wife Eurydice above all to have risked coming to the Underworld.

"Orpheus your song has touched my heart," spoke Hades. "Yes, there is a part of me that knows mercy and is kind; for this I will offer you two choices. Do you understand me?"

"I understand, oh great god king," replied Orpheus with a humble bow.

"First, you may choose to leave here with your wife Eurydice walking behind you. However should you look back before you reach the surface and the light of Helios touch her skin she will be lost to you for all eternity, never again will you intertwine with her. Should you choose this path be warned, the dead will try to tempt you to look back. The closer you get to the surface, the greater the temptation will be." Hades explained to the poet.

Orpheus was nearly ready to accept the offer to walk back to the surface with Eurydice walking behind him. But at the mention of being separated from her, if he looked back at her, he stopped and waited to hear the other choice for he couldn't help but to look at her.

"Your second choice is to choose to remain here in the Underworld. Give up the remaining years of your life and you and Eurydice will forever be together in the Elysium Fields."

Orpheus carefully considered the options Hades was giving him. In one hand he could return to the surface with Eurydice, but he might lose her for all of eternity. On the other hand, he could stay here and be guaranteed to stay with her for all of eternity. After much inner debating with himself, Orpheus looked up at the gods before him and said, "I choose to remain here in the Underworld for I cannot bear the thought of being separated from my beloved Eurydice for all of eternity."

"Then it is done," replied Hades. "Take hold of your wife and enter into the fields of Elysium."

With joy in his heart, Orpheus took hold of his wife's hand and together they walked into the Elysium Fields.

Well, there's my little one-shot. I know it's not much, but I hope those of you who read it enjoyed it.
