Author's notes: So this is a one-shot from the Nailed Shut-'verse. It's really sad, but I hope you all like it.

Ready To Go

It's past Kurt's bedtime, but he sits on the soft carpet of the hallway floor outside his parents' bedroom, making patterns on his knee with his finger.

"Kurt, your mother wants to see you."

Kurt looks up to see his father looking down at him, a sad look in his eyes. He shoots up from the floor and pads into the bedroom. His father closes the door behind him, leaving Kurt alone with her.

"Hi mommy." Kurt climbs onto the bed and sits beside where she is half-sitting, propped up on a couple of pillows. "I'm so happy that you're finally home."

"Come here." his mommy says softly, reaching her arms out toward him. "I missed you."

"I missed you too." Kurt crawls over and snuggles down beside her, leaning his head on her shoulder and smelling her neck. "You don't smell like the hospital anymore."

"Good."

Kurt's head bounces a little as she chuckles and then coughs a couple of times. "You won't go back there now, right?" he mumbles, fidgeting with the hem of her pale yellow t-shirt.

"No, honey, I won't." she says, lifting her hand to run her fingers through his hair. "They can't fix me."

"So you won't get better?"

"No." she says sadly, leaning her cheek against his forehead.

Kurt closes his eyes and listens to her breathing. "Maybe they need you somewhere else." he says thoughtfully.

"Maybe." she sniffles. "But you need me more."

Kurt opens his eyes and looks up at his mother's face. He sees a tear slide down her cheek, and he reaches up to brush it away with his thumb. "Don't cry mommy."

She kisses his forehead and then leans back with a sigh. "I'm just so tired."

"Then we'll sleep." Kurt states simply, resuming to pick at her shirt. He is quiet for a little while, thinking. Then he snuggles even closer to her. "It's okay if you can't fight anymore. I'm gonna miss you, but I don't like it when you are in pain." he whispers, his breath hitching a little. "It's okay if you rest, mommy."

"I love you so much, honey. And I always will."

"I know. I love you too." Kurt closes his eyes again and simply enjoys the warmth of his mother's body, the soothing feeling of her combing her fingers through his hair and the smell of her shampoo and skin.

"Goodnight, darling." she whispers into his hair, moving her other hand to hold one of his small ones.

"Sleep well, mommy."

"Kurt. Kurt, wake up buddy."

Kurt's stomach swooshes as he is lifted into his father's arms. "Morning, daddy." he mumbles, rubbing his eyes before opening them. His daddy's cheeks are wet so Kurt lifts his hand and wipes at them with his palm. "Don't cry, daddy."

"She's gone, Kurt." his father says gruffly.

Kurt looks down at the bed and sees that his mommy isn't moving. His eyes prickle and he lets out a sob. "Mommy?"

There is of course no response, and Kurt doesn't protest as his father carries him downstairs into the living room. Kurt's daddy sits down in his old armchair with Kurt on his lap. "They're coming to get her in a little while."

"That's not her." Kurt says simply, looking toward the window. "She's not in there anymore. She's sitting on a cloud, swinging her legs and looking down over us now."

"It's just you and me now, scooter."

"She'll always be with us, though."
