Chapter One

I won't lie to you.

The view from the top of the Empire State Building is really…complicated. You could look one way and see the Long Island Sound - which was very polluted, might I add - and in the other was this gorgeous sunset.

Well it would have been gorgeous if (a) there wasn't so much dang smog that my eyes watered and (b) Gazzy would stop giving evidence that he had eaten chili or beans or something in the past six hours.

"AGH!" I groaned for like the eighth time in twelve minutes. Nudges had been holding her breath for so long her fast was turning blue - which was weird. Angel was cracking up, which is something we don't often see in this under privileged eight-year-old.

"Okay, I know I can't see, but I can sure as heck smell!" Iggy, said, backing away from Gazzy. This only made Gazzy laugh harder. Total whimpered, flattening himself against the metal floor.

For a moment, as I did a quick 360, I was at loss as to where the heck Fang was. But then I felt a warm presence next to me and suddenly his hand was wrapped around my waist. I instantly relaxed, leaning into my dark prince of the sky.

"You need to relax." Fang said softly, kissing the top of my head. I tried to concentrate on the sunset, and Fang, and just about everything else, but stay relaxed at the same time. Let me tell you, it wasn't easy.

And then Angel piped up.

"Let's all go look at the Long Island Sound -" when I turned, she got this mischievous glint in her blue eyes, "- except for Max and Fang." And at that, Fang and I were alone. I turned back to him, grinning a little.

"So," I began, "How are you going to make me relax?" He grinned, turning me towards the sunset.

"I know one way."

Everything will be fine, Max. I heard in my head.

"Wha…?" I began to ask, but it was too late.

Fang placed one hand on my back, and shoved me off the top of the Empire State Building.
