My Best Friend

It was Saturday night at Titans Tower, and all crime had been fought and all research been done. All together, it was to be a very quiet and peaceful night for the Titans.

The redhead alien giggled as she leaned in closer to her boyfriend, Robin. He smiled at her, wrapping an arm around her as they curled up together on their red sofa. They were in the living room, while Beastboy and Terra occupied the kitchen. Starfire leaned over to whisper a secret in her boyfriend's ear, her long strands twirling as she moved. In response to their little secret, Robin pulled her in for another kiss.

He supposed he was to be glad for his best friend. Speedy was certain that he wasn't supposed to be glaring at them. The key word was "supposed." He sat on the other couch, observing their interactions. It hurt watching them like this, but he couldn't turn away. To him, it was like watching a train wreck. The more he watched, the more his heart broke, yet he couldn't remove his gaze. It really wasn't fair. In fact, it really drove him nuts. Sure, the Tamaranian alien was absolutely gorgeous and happened to be one of the nicest, sweetest girls he had ever met, but it didn't make any of this feel better. Speedy understood Robin deserved better than him. Starfire was innocent, pure, and basically everything he wasn't. However, he found himself wishing…

Still curled up on their couch, Starfire brushed Robin's hand.

"Robin?" she asked. "I am hungry. Do you want some of the Gugaf?" She stared at her boyfriend as she stood up to head for the kitchen. Robin smiled.

"It's okay. I'll wait here for you," he answered. She really was adorable. He didn't take his eyes of her until, she disappeared in the kitchen.

"She's really something, huh?" asked Speedy, doing his very best to put on his not-jealous face. Robin laughed as he glanced at the ruddy haired boy.

"Yeah! I never thought she would want to go out with me, but I guess I must have done something really good," Robin explained with disbelief. If he had been a little more observant, he would have seen his best friend's face fall even further.

"Trust me. You deserve it," forced out Speedy, rummaging through his pack and pulling out an arrow. It was much easier for him to study his arrows and touch them, than for him to stare at the boy wonder's beautiful eyes. Robin put a hand on his shoulder.

"Thanks. You know…thanks for always being there for me and giving advice, helping me out when I need it," said Robin, removing his hand. Speedy felt the warmth still lingering, and wanted to pull Robin's hand right back on.

"That's what's best friends are for," he fake grinned, hoping his corny statement would make Robin laugh at least. Robin did laugh, but then his face grew solemn.

"Seriously though, that is what best friends are for," the boy wonder replied.

"Yeah…best friends," Speedy echoed, letting his voice emphasize the word friends, as if hearing the echo would stop him from thinking. A part of him wanted to scream. He wanted to holler, grab Robin, and proclaim his undying love before whisking the Boy Wonder away like a prince from a fairytale. He didn't.

Friends…

That was all they could ever be after all.
