Calvin and Hobbes. That's the way it always was. And that's how Hobbes thought it always was gonna be. But he was wrong.
Pretty soon Calvin stopped playing with his toys. Toy blaster guns and card board boxes were replaced with trading cards and a new computer. At first Hobbes was elated. A computer?!?!? Boy oh boy did he and Calvin have fun playing games on that.
But not long after that Calvin didn't bring Hobbes along with him to the computer. Or to school. And Hobbes spent most of his days on the floor of Calvin's messy rooms.
Hobbes pushed it off as Calvin just being Calvin. He did have a short attention span, after all. Summer was coming, and soon games of Calvinball would begin. Hobbes couldn't wait.
Then the morning of summer vacation came, and Calvin went outside without him. Hobbes screamed and yelled and growled as loud as he could, but Calvin couldn't hear him. And soon Hobbes was put in the duplicator box, except the box held old toys, instead of clones.
Before Hobbes knew it, more than ten years had passed. But Calvin had moved on. Grown up into a young man. Married to his childhood crush Susie. Traitor, Hobbes thought. Whatever happened to G.R.O.S.S??? Did it's secret handshake mean nothing? In fact, Calvin had a job to focus on. His blue eyes didn't seem to sparkle with imagination anymore. Just the need to pay the bills, and be home on time for dinner.
But when Hobbes found familiar hands hold him he thought, This is really it. He's gonna throw me away for good. Calvin didn't need him anymore. That's why he had been thrown in and out of boxes for the past fifteen years. And a single tear fell from Hobbes only remaining eye, rolling down his now dusty whiskers.
Hobbes closed his eyes, waiting. Nothing happened. When he dared to open them he found himself staring into blue eyes not unlike Calvin's, but certainly not his.
"There you go Jr. His name is Hobbes. You like him?"
The infant gurgled happily, spitting up on Hobbes. "Oh no, not again," Calvin groaned. "Susie?"
Hobbes smiled. Just like old times.
