First Kiss

A Narnia One-shot

Susan took one, and only one, look back at Caspian. King Caspian X, who saved the world, he might be to all the rest of Narnia, but to me, he was just Caspian, the handsome young Telmarine-Narnian man who had not five minutes ago given Susan her first kiss.

One look back, looking on that which she would never see again, and then she was back in London. On a train-station platform. In her school uniform. And I couldn't even get a photograph, was my first ridiculous thought. Of course there weren't cameras in Narnia.

TWO WEEKS LATER

It was a beautiful Sunday afternoon. Off of school, Susan had agreed to take Lucy out to the park. She was sitting quietly on a bench when a boy who she knew from somewhere, one of Peter's friends, came up to her. "Hello, Susan", he said.

She sighed. "Hello, Thomas."

"You know, it's the strangest thing..." As Thomas began to babble on, she turned to doing what I usually did - remembering.

The first time Caspian met me, his only emotions toward me were awe and reverence, and perhaps even fear. Me, Queen Susan, High Queen of Narnia! To him, I was a legend, some would even say a myth. But he knew I was no myth, for it was my horn that had saved him, my arrows that had saved his friend, and now there I stood in front of him!

"Susan."

"Yes, Thomas?"

"Come along Susan, talk to me! I would like to know you better."

"Come along Susan, talk to him!", Lucy teased. Caspian looked at me shyly. "You can talk to me if you wish, Queen Susan." I suddenly felt just as shy. "You can call me Susan, Caspian." "I-I should like to know you better", he said, "Susan."

Thomas was taking to looking at me in an uncomfortable manner. "You know you're a very beautiful girl, Susan."

Caspian and I had been talking for nearly a half of an hour. He seemed intent on learning more about the lands where I come from. "And the women there", he murmured, "are they all as stunning as yourself?" I blushed. "Caspian!" "What? You know, you're a very beautiful woman, Queen Susan." This time, when he said "Queen" Susan, he meant it more as a term of endearment than as a title.

The flashbacks wouldn't stop coming. Everything about this boy seemed to be like Caspian, and yet he wasn't Caspian.

"Su-san!" That was Lucy yelling. "Time to go, Susan!" She stood up. Thomas stood up beside her.

"I wish we had more time together", he said shyly.

"I wish we had more time together", Caspian said as I stood, ready to enter the Door In the Air back to our world. "It-it would never have worked out between us." "Why not?" "Because - I am about 300 years older than you." Thinking of all the people watching, I was going to leave it at that, but I couldn't. Hang what they think, I thought. I embraced Caspian. He pulled me in, turning the embrace into a passionate kiss. My first - and coming from a man I was doomed to be cut off from forever.
