The Death of Ralph

(Lord of the Flies)

Ralph blew the conch for another meeting, the little-uns on one side and the rest on the other, the people were generally losing track of who was to look after the fire. He began to speak, in his usual assertive manner which made most people respect and obey him, as he opened his mouth Jack grabs the conch and shouts out "we don't need fire what we need is meat, the only reason for fire is to cook meat!" Ralph replied if we ever want hope of ever being rescued we need the fire so as any passing ships would notice our island and be able to rescue us. If we were ever to be rescued it would already have happened. Then piggy gets the conch and says "we need the fire for both cooking and signalling it would b easier to have it burning all the time so that when we meat we can cook it right away." Ralph took back the conch and said "it's settled then we will keep the fire burning at all times."

A few of the boys, Ralph, Simon, piggy, Sam, and, Eric, gather dry wood to start the fire and then greener, wetter wood to make it smokier for a signal. Once all the wood is brought to the top of the mountain they get the smaller wood and angle Piggy's glasses to start the fire. Once the fire was going they sat down to take a break.

Just then Jack ran up with the rest of his group with a small sow impaled on a sharp stick. They got two forked sticks and rested the one with pig on them over the fire.

Everyone started dancing and cheering around the sow cooking on the stick, for this would be the first meat for a while for many of them, in all the excitement piggy stumbles and falls and his glasses fly into the raging fire. Simon makes a quick grab for them but burns his hand badly.

The dancing stops as they all watch as the glasses slowly melt away. All hope of rekindling the fire if it goes out is lost.

Jack, blind with rage, rushes at Piggy Ralph quickly steps in front but Jack merely shoves him aside as Ralph falls the edge of the cliff gives away and Ralph tumbles into the sea.
