Thankful? Here?
Disclaimer: I do not own Narnia.
Faith crossed her arms, sitting down with a huff. "Well, this is a fine fix we're in."
Hannah smirked in agreement. "Yeah. Not like it hasn't happened before…"
"Good point. So, we just wait for Peter, Edmund, and/or Rose to rescue us?"
"Yep. Like usual. Unless, of course, you would prefer to have a Calormene scimitar sticking out of your chest?"
"Not exactly, no." Faith fell silent for a few minutes, studying the prison walls surrounding them.
Hannah's voice soon cut through the quiet. "Hey, Faith?"
"Um hum?"
"Do you even remember what day it is?"
"I think it's the fourth Thursday in November, isn't it?"
"Sounds right… Do you feel like there's something special about that day?"
"Yeah. Like I used to know it, but now I don't."
Hannah thought for several minutes before snapping her fingers. "It's Thanksgiving!"
"Oh yeah! Not like we have much to be thankful for this year, right?"
"Faith," Hannah said in a warning tone of voice.
"What? Han, we're sitting in a Calormene dungeon! What is there to be thankful for?"
"Well, we're alive, we're together, we aren't wounded (and that in and of itself is a miracle). We can be thankful for Peter, Edmund, Lucy, Susan, Rose, Mary, Martha-"
"You mean be thankful they're not here?"
"That, too. We can be thankful for Narnia, for Cair Paravel, for Aslan, for His love, for-"
"Okay, Han. I get it. We need to be thankful no matter what our circumstances are."
Hannah smiled. "Yep. Remember, the Pilgrims had an awful winter, and they were probably still thankful then!"
"That's right."
"And Jesus, or Aslan if you want to get technical, wants us to be thankful, even here. Remember what 1 Thessalonians 5:18 says: in everything give thanks; for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus."
"I'll take your word on the verse. I never memorized that one."
"And I think I hear another good reason for us to be thankful."
"What's that?"
Hannah winked. "Peter, Edmund, and Rose came to rescue us!"
Faith rolled her eyes. "Took them long enough!" Just then, two very worried and angry kings rushed into their cell, swords drawn. An angry knight wasn't far behind them. "Are you two all right?" Peter asked breathlessly.
Hannah grinned. "Oh, we're fine."
"Perfectly," Faith agreed.
"Good! You two had us scared!" Rose said.
"It's not our fault!"
"We know that. Come on; let's go home," Edmund said, taking Faith's arm and leading her out. Peter did likewise with me. "Hey, Rose?"
"Yeah, Han?"
"Happy Thanksgiving."
Happy Thanksgiving to all my American readers!
