For the Character Appreciation Challenge (Su Li) and The TV Show Episode Monthly Competition (prompt one: Write about a child)
"What are you doing, child?"
With a squeak, Su drops the book to the floor, her cheeks burning with guilt. "I was just reading, Grandmother," she says, scrambling to grab the book again.
Her grandmother raises her brows, plucking the book from her hands. "Just reading," she echoes dryly. "Reading for pleasure like a normal eight year old? I think not. I know that look in your eyes, Su. You're looking for something."
Su doesn't reply. She feels her heart sink as her grandmother scans the page. The frown on the older witch's lips make Su wish that she could into the floor and disappear forever.
"A beauty potion?"
"The other children in school tell me that I look funny," Su sniffles, and she doesn't know if the tears are from the wounds left behind by their words or the shame of having to admit it to her grandmother.
"What is your name?"
Su frowns. It seems like such a strange question. Her grandmother knows her name. She had been there when Su was born, after all. "Su."
"Su what?"
"Su Li."
"Li. Don't ever forget that. You come from a long line of strong Chinese witches and wizards, child. Think of the dishonor you bring to their name by wishing to separate yourself from them."
"But they call me terrible things, Grandmother," Su insists.
"My child, they will always have things to say. Muggles are strange and care about the most superficial things."
Su wipes her eyes. She wishes that she could stop crying. Grandmother has always told her that warriors do not cry.
But there is no anger in her grandmother's eyes as she pulls Su into a hug. "Embrace your heritage, child. Embrace your name. It is the only thing that cannot be taken from you."
Su nods, sniffling. "Yes, Grandmother."
"Good girl," her grandmother says, flipping through the pages of the book. "Now, forget all about beauty potions. Grandmother is going to show you how to brew a cheering potion."
Su nods again. She sits up straight and tall, eager to learn more.
