Rejection
Kurt Hummel sat in silence in his living room. His dad and step- mother were out, Sam was with Mercedes, and Finn with Rachel. So he was all alone in the house, staring blankly at the rejection letter from NYADA that he had read a million times as if hoping the words on the page would change the next time he read it.
The doorbell rang, breaking Kurt out of his reverie. He wanted to ignore it, but stood up and stalked over to the door. He opened it to find his boyfriend standing on the threshold.
"Finn called and told me," Blaine said. He took two steps and wrapped his arms around Kurt. This simple act was like a breaking of the dam. Kurt sobbed in his shoulder, the letter still clutched in his hand.
Blaine led him back to the sofa and set him down. Blaine sat next to him, arms still wrapped around his shoulder.
"I guess I don't need to ask how you're doing."
The noise Kurt made was something in between a laugh and a sob. "I just thought it wasn't going to happen. The lady from NYADA loved my audition! I fully expected to be accepted and be off to New York with Rachel. I was an idiot."
"No, you weren't," Blaine protested. "You totally deserved to get into that school, and that rejection is totally a mistake on their part."
Kurt smiled, which made Blaine's heart flutter as usual. "Thanks. The good news is I will be getting out of Lima. I was accepted at the Art Institute of Ohio in Cincinnati."
"Are you sure you want to go into fashion design?" Blaine asked.
"I wanted to for quite awhile," Kurt replied. "I got sidetracked with dreams of New York and Broadway… but now with this, I'm really thinking about it again."
Blaine reached over with his other hand and took Kurt's. "Well, if it's what you want to do, I'm willing to bet you'll be amazing."
Kurt looked down, grinning and blushing. He knew Blaine had come over to make him feel better, and it certainly worked. He was still really disappointed… but now he could picture a new future, first in Cincinnati, then maybe even New York at last.
He looked up at Blaine, tears blurring his eyes despite his best efforts to keep them down. He leaned over and kissed Blaine. Blaine placed a hand on Kurt's cheek and kissed him back. They finally separated, a little happier than in the beginning of the meeting.
"So what do you say we head over to Lima Bean?" Blaine asked. "We might get lucky and avoid Sebastian."
"Definitely," Kurt replied.
The two of them walked out hand- in- hand, the rejection letter left on the coffee table. For the first time all year, Kurt felt like things might just finally go his way.
