The Audition
Disclaimer: I do not own A:TLA or the song colors of the wind I do however own this plotline.
She was standing center stage, the spot light right on her and she looked forward and saw me. She looked away from me and started to sing.
You think I'm an ignorant savage
And you've been so many places
I guess it must be so
But still I cannot see
If the savage one is me
How can there be so much that you don't know?
You don't know ...
She looks at me again, on the last line, it feels like she's talking directly to me, because in her mind she is.
You think you own whatever land you land on
The Earth is just a dead thing you can claim
But I know every rock and tree and creature
Has a life, has a spirit, has a name
She loves the earth and she believes pretty much every word of this song.
You think the only people who are people
Are the people who look and think like you
But if you walk the footsteps of a stranger
You'll learn things you never knew you never knew
She has copper skin I have pale skin. She is the least racistist person I know; I just might be the most.
Have you ever heard the wolf cry to the blue corn moon
Or asked the grinning bobcat why he grinned?
Can you sing with all the voices of the mountains?
Can you paint with all the colors of the wind?
Can you paint with all the colors of the wind?
She looks back, previously she had been walking around the stage and now she is off the stage walking down the aisles towards me, still singing acting like she means everything she says.
Come run the hidden pine trails of the forest
Come taste the sunsweet berries of the Earth
Come roll in all the riches all around you
And for once, never wonder what they're worth
She is with me at the back of the school auditorium dragging me with her back to the stage, still singing.
The rainstorm and the river are my brothers
The heron and the otter are my friends
And we are all connected to each other
In a circle, in a hoop that never ends
We get to the stage, but she doesn't go on the stage she drags me around the entire auditorium, still singing.
How high will the sycamore grow?
If you cut it down, then you'll never know
And you'll never hear the wolf cry to the blue corn moon
We are in the center aisle in the perfect center of the room.
For whether we are white or copper skinned
We need to sing with all the voices of the mountains
We need to paint with all the colors of the wind
She runs back to the stage leaving me standing there dumbfounded.
You can own the Earth and still
All you'll own is Earth until
You can paint with all the colors of the wind
She is on the stage and she sits stops singing and stares at me not looking at anyone else. Then the spotlight turns off and the lights turn back on, the drama teacher starts clapping. The drama teacher announces to the 27 other students that they can go home because she has found her Pocahontas and John Smith. I had tried out just before my friend. She looks at me and smiles then runs outside and I follow. She turns to me when we are outside and saying nothing she just grabs my face and kisses me. She pulls away and says, "You know I'm starting to think you're more than just my best friend." Then she walks away and gets in her brother's car and they go home. I look to the heavens and say out loud, "THANK YOU!" then I get a text from her that says:
meet me at the mall in an hour
Love,
Katara
I text back saying:
okay I will
Love,
Zuko.
