Troubling Similarities
Elena and Katherine have more in common than she thought. Post season-finale.
Damon had fallen back asleep after Katherine left. Elena gazed at him, her thoughts wandering wildly. It was the only time she had seen him at peace- that and right before she had kissed him. She tried to brush the thought away, tried to tell herself that it didn't mean anything, but it did. Katherine's parting words rang in her mind, "It's okay to love them both…I did."
Elena wanted nothing to do with that bitch.
Katherine was conniving, selfish, two-faced. Elena thought she was different. She convinced herself that she was different.
Was she really?
Katherine professed to love both Salvatore brothers, insisted that they had both loved her truly- no compellation needed. Elena had scoffed at this before, dismissed it as another lie that Katherine told.
But if she looked deeper inside herself, Elena did love Stefan and Damon both. Damon was right, it would always be Stefan. But there was this little part of her that craved his darkness…and his light too. He had changed, and she knew that it was for her. She remembered the heartless vampire that had appeared in Mystic Falls awhile ago…Damon had gotten his humanity back, as much as he tried to hide it. He had a conscious now, and a fierce loyalty for his brother that he masked with sarcasm, but it was there. It was what prevented him from kissing Elena in the first place. He had torn apart everyone he loved before, and wasn't about to let that happen again.
Elena understood now.
Although they shared the same face and the same loves, Elena knew she would never be like Katherine. She wasn't willing to tear Stefan and Damon apart. She would put their lives before her own. She would sacrifice, and Katherine wouldn't. That was what made them different.
Elena curled up next to Damon on the big bed, and promptly fell asleep.
