"It's me or her Eddie, time choose." Mel said as they stood in the middle of the corridor, not paying attention to the students and teachers that walked past them.

"Mel what are you talking about?" Eddie asked unsure where she was going with her latest in a long line of paranoid questions, spanning their whole relationship.

"You know very well who I'm talking about."

"No, I really don't Mel, so tell me what got you so upset." Eddie said trying not to set her off crying again, as once she starts there really is no telling how long the tears will go on for.

Shaking her head at the lack of response she was getting, Mel turned and headed off down the corridor leaving Eddie dumbfounded for a few seconds before he took off after her, not wanting to leave the discussion at that especially when he had no idea what the real reason for her temper was.

Catching up to Mel he gently pulled her into an empty classroom, hoping to keep the gossip to a minimum. Closing the door behind him after checking that the coast was clear of anyone who may take interest to the newest falling out of the couple.

"Now Mel tell me what has got you so wound up?" Taking a seat he looked at her expectantly, waiting to find out what was his fault once again.

"Choose me or her." Mel repeated.

"Who? Choose who?"

"Oh for God's sake Eddie, choose it's either me or Rachel." She answered in through the tears that were now steadily make tracks down her cheeks, leaving tiny mascara trails behind them.

The look on Eddie's face could only be described as shocked at the demand that had come out of far left field. Though the look on his face was all Mel needed, it was written plain as day on his face, he wasn't even bothering to try and cover up his decision that had been made without a single second of hesitation.

"That's what I thought. Eddie you and me will never work if you keep comparing me to Rachel, I'm nothing like her. Clearly by your silence that means that she is your choice. I'm not angry; I'm just of being compared to my sister and not ever being able to meet those standards. She has achieved so much more than I ever could and I don't blame you for wanting to be with her. Here take this back and maybe next time you propose it will be to the right person." Mel finished as she slipped the engagement ring off her finger and placed into his palm.

"Thank you." Eddie said not even knowing why but that it felt right to thank her for what she was doing.

"No thank you, you gave me a chance and I blew it by lying to you, I'm only doing what is right and if it means I have to lose you for you to be happy then I'm willing to endure a little heartbreak for the happiness of you and my sister, but so help me God if you hurt her I will come down on you like a tonne of bricks and make what some of the Hollywood horror films look like child's play." She said as she walked out of the door, not once looking back towards what her life could have been like, if only she had been open and honest with him from the start.

Leaning heavily against the desk he was perched on Eddie continued to stare at the ring that looked so tiny in his outstretched palm. Fingering the cooling metal he slipped it into his pocket and made his way out of the room, leaving behind the conversation and the headaches that being in a relationship with Mel had brought almost daily.
