Words Unspoken

In the beginning, she chose him for his luck.

They'd been through hell and back together, and at first, she cared for him because that was her directive. At first, he cared for her because that was his duty, to keep her out of the hands of those that wished humanity harm.

But somewhere along the line, it became more than that, more than just orders, more than just humanity.

She never voiced it, and neither did he, for what good would it have done either of them? The dreams of a happy peaceful life together would never be possible, they were built for war. So the emotion remained, unaddressed yet not entirely ignored, growing stronger when he rescued her like he promised - for that promise, that hope of him when she had been so close to giving up had allowed her to hang on.

He had always assumed that one of them would die. He just had never thought that it would have been her.

And for once, he wished he wasn't so lucky.
