Top of the World

Roy Mustang is a successful man. He has pushed his way to the very top. Victory, verification and glory, all he's ever sought, are within his grasp.

No longer a naïve lieutenant, he knows that a chance like this one will never come around again and the sacrifices and work people have put in to get him here should not be for naught.

Then why was he hesitating? Why was he only ever able to stare down at the perfectly white, unmarred page with the elegant script and gold trimmings? Why was it so impossible for him to pen his reply?

"I want to find exoneration for the crimes I've committed."

"Then I'll work from under you and push you straight to the top."

Maes.

"Get yourself a wife Roy!"

The man who always wanted to spread the wealth. He was a man who believed in spreading the wealth. He was a man who believed that everyone could and should be as lucky as him. And he fought for that. His goal in life was the realization of another person's dreams. Him….The Elrics….He was a selfless man that influenced him in so many ways and Roy hopes he can become a fraction of the man Hughes was.

"I deserve to be there!"

"I'll follow you to the ends of the earth!!"

"Wow Colonel you're the type of guy you can really count on to save a guys neck huh?"

"Congratulations. This is only the beginning."

Havoc, Fallan and the others, the general and overall eastern headquarters had backed him time and time again. These were people who had been his very foundation. The people who were most loyal and inspirational.

"I'm going straight to the top. Are you coming with me?"

"Of course."

And Riza Hawkeye had been there through it all the entire time, forming both his strongest shield and forget alchemy. She was his deadliest weapon. That woman was fierce, frightening and most of all loyal. He had never once regretted taking her under his wing.

She had dragged him kicking and screaming places and been dragged in the same manner. She was always there where and when she was needed. She knew exactly where her loyalties lay. He envied her unwavering strength in some moments.

She wanted that dream for him too.

Maes and her had been the two biggest influences. He wishes he could repay them all and he fears one's fate will match the others.

So that could be the reason he couldn't accept, because there were so many people who deserved such fortune far more than him. What had he done to luck out so fantastically with the subordinates and friends he did?

"You're being an idiot," she finally tells him when she's had enough, "Hughes would be unbelievably pissed."

He doesn't say anything.

"A lot of people have worked their asses off for this."

Damn it, doesn't he know it.

"Maybe I don't know if I want it anymore."

She doesn't know what else to do so she slaps him. She sputters over his words and he doesn't think he's ever seen her at such a loss. She grabs him by the front of the shirt, "You listen here General Roy Mustang. I am Brigadier General Riza Hawkeye; someone who has been with you since the start. You are not giving up now. Not when it's yours. This isn't some girl you drool over just for the chase. It's your life and dream and I'm not letting you throw away your chance to do good.

The next day he sends in his acceptance letter.
