Lost Appetite

Morgana sat and watched with mild distaste as Arthur muttered abuses under his breath to no one in particular. They were in the dining hall, and Arthur was standing at the head of the table, chuckling as he watched Merlin scurry out of the large stone room, headed for the horse stables. Flopping back down in his chair, Arthur grabbed an apple and took an overlarge bite. He continued smiling to himself even after Merlin had left the room. Morgana simply watched with a knowing smirk, though the prince seemed not to take any notice.

"When I was young, we used to have a dog," Morgana began suddenly, narrowing her eyes. Arthur glanced over at her with limited interest. "It was so cute," she continued, her expression softening into a smile as she felt the bittersweet twinge of nostalgia. "I would play with him all the time." She paused, laughing quietly to herself. "Sometimes, I would call him names, like stupid, or idiot. But I would do it in a friendly voice, and he would just wag his tail, looking up at me with his adorably-stupid and innocent eyes. Even when he was bad, and I would swat his snout, he would just look up at me with those big eyes." She paused, watching as Arthur's expression fell slightly. "He loved me no matter what I said or did to him." Morgana sighed. "It was reassuring at the time, but in retrospect, I find it to be embarrassing, and a little sad."

Morgana stood, and pulled her fur stole closer around her shoulders as she walked past Arthur and out of the dining hall. Arthur sat in his chair, munching on his apple as he waited for his meal to be served, slowly forgetting everything Morgana had just said.

Guinevere startled when Morgana returned from her lunch earlier than expected. "Is something wrong?" the servant girl asked with concern, noting the troubled expression on Morgana's face.

Morgana smiled slightly and shook her head. "No, I just seem to have lost my appetite."
